Stroller for 3? (2 infants and a toddler)

Hey everyone - I just learned I am pregnant with twins. I have a daughter who will be two and a half when they are born, and I am wondering if anyone has any recommendations for strollers. Not sure if my toddler would like the stand up/ride along kind, but I am open to anyone who has used something with success. By success I mean it is not 400 pounds and the size of a tank! Also, I was hoping to re-use my daughters baby trend car seat -  so it would be great if it was compatible.

Re: Stroller for 3? (2 infants and a toddler)

  • I have been looking, too. My DD will be 20 months when the twins arrive. A lot of folks suggest the Valco Twin with a Joey Seat, but that's for after babies are out of infant seats. I'll be keeping an eye on this post to see if you get any other suggestions.

  • I am going to be buying a hand-me-down Joovy Big Caboose from a family that had multiples. They are expensive (about $300),  but I think this will be the ticket for us. I have a 2 year old who will be 21/2 when the twins are born as well.

    Congratulations :)

  • We use a "station" for my older.  She/he olds a fabric strap of cloth attached the the stroller and is not allowed to let go.  Takes some training but my first caught on VERY fast (within three trips to the store using it) and my second took right to it because he saw big sis using it.  Its amazing!

  • our son will be 4 when our twins are born. We got a double jogging stroller for the babies but we also got the jeep tandem umbrella stroller that will hold his weight as well and most time we will wear one baby in our ergo carrier should he get too tired to walk and wants to ride. We may do something different but for now thats our plan. We have a single stroller from when he was a baby he still will use so if we go someplace with a ton of walking we most likely will just bring two strollers one for me to push and one for my husband.

  • My DD will be 2.5 when the twins are born and we just bought the Baby Jogger City Select - I thought about buying the buggy board but might just wear one twin and put the other twin and DD in the stroller. I got it on sale on Albee Baby in grey, two weeks ago.

  • I have a Joovy Big Caboose triple stroller.  It is heavy and turns like a bus.  I mostly use my Valco Baby and I'm considering getting the joey seat for my 2.5 year old.

  • BJCS configured as a double for $535 on justkidsstore.com with coupon school20. You can add a buggy board for another $64 less the 20% off. It'll be a very most compact option, though definitely not the cheapest! I thought about getting rid of mine since the twins seems kind of close together at 14 months, but we are thinking of crazily ttc a fifth and it certainly is a nice option. Plus after trying to navigate back-to-school shopping this week, it is nice to have a tandem stroller for many reasons!

a lot of this will depend of your LO will be a good candidate for a buggy board at that age. My second son would have done great at 2.5, my eldest would have needed to be tied in ;)

  • I have the BJCS and bought this for it:  https://www.amazon.com/Englacha-2-In-1-Junior-Rider-Black/dp/B001AQLGO2

I haven't tested it out with my toddler in public yet, but it worked OK in the house.  I kind of see it more as a very occasional-use item and he can just walk most of the time if it's short distances or quick trips.

Yes, but it's pretty simple to get on and off - hard to explain, but there's like these little sliding trigger latch things, so you pull them back, put it on, and let go.  I keep it in the van with me and am waiting for a good opportunity to try it when I have all three of the kiddos out and about but can easily bail on whatever errand I'm trying to run.

I have an older style Valco (the Twin Runabout) and the seats recline so that you can use it with infants. I love the stroller, though it is big and bulky. My son was just under 2 1/2 when my girls were born and I didn't get the Joey seat. There is space on the front of the stroller where he can comfortably sit for short walk. This is a pic of the stroller. They are pricey new, but I was able to find a used one on Ebay.

I found that I didn't need to have all 3 in a stroller very often. I also had a DSNG to use with the infant carriers, which was very handy. I purchased a ride on board for my son, but rarely used it. Best wishes with your pregnancy! 3u3 is an adventure :).

  • Another vote for the Joovy Big Caboose.

I just bought a great condition-used Joovy Big Caboose for less than half price on CL last week.

I am waiting to see if the Joovy Caboose Too seat converter goes on sale. This will convert the rear jump-style bench to a forward-facing 5pt harness seat.
The stroller also comes standard with 2 carrier adapters and 2 snack trays. The canopies are fairly big and detachable. It does not come with adult cup holders but that is available separate, as well as a rain cover.
I am often out solo with all of my kids (definitely need a tandem in some places already) and long-term baby wearing doesn't work well for me.
My twins will be 2y4m when this baby gets here and I'm not so sure that either of them will be able to stay on the back bench safely.
It's about 35+lbs and is a tight fit in the back of my 05 Toyota Sienna but it will keep the youngest of my tribe safe and secure while crossing parking lots, etc. It doesn't seem much longer than my SBS all-terrain (handle-to-front wheel), but like a DSNG, it does take a little practice turning corners.
From the research I made, I believe it is the most compact triple tandem on the market right now, and probably the least expensive, even at full retail.

  • My DS1 was 2y4m when the twins were born and already walked most of the time we were out at the zoo, etc. Similar to Kiwi, I bought a new BOB Duallie which has enough space for DS1 to sit on the front when he needs to ride. I don't know what year BOB changed the design, but its only the newer model that has the flat area in the foot well to pass as a toddler seat. We throw a baby carrier in the bag if we anticipate we may need to use one of the actual seats to strap in a crabby/uncooperative DS1. It works really well for us -- I didn't want to deal with attaching a boogie board for intermittent use.

    DS2 & DD1: 01.14.13
  • We have the bjcs with the matching buggy board. I have a 4 yo, 2yo and twin 2 mos olds. We will put the 2 yo in the front seat, a baby in car seat attachment, wear a baby and the 4 yo on board. Or, if 2 yo isn't tired, both babies in car seats, like a dsng, and 2 yo on board. I love how versatile this stroller is. Worth every penny.

This is what we did. Worked pretty well.

  • Although we have a buggy board, we have yet to use it, so I can't comment on that just yet.

When the babies were smaller, we were able to fit both of them in one side of the (Double) BJCM and put DS1 in the other side (he had just turned 2 when the twins were born). The seats in the BJCM recline almost all the way, and this worked great.

When the twins got too big to ride in one side of the stroller together, I started wearing one (usually since she is lighter, slightly..), and putting DS1 and DS2 in the stroller.

We have a DSNG also, and I used that a handful of times with the twins' car seats, but you can also get a car seat adapter for the BJCM (but it will only take 1 car sear, not 2). I plan to try the buggy board out soon to see if DS likes it, but wearing my DD and putting the boys in the stroller works pretty well for us for now.

I would definitely recommend Albee Baby if you decide on the DBJCM. You can save a ton of $$ If you're ok with an "off" color (like gray and green, or gray and orange instead of black) and shipping is free. Good luck with your pregnancy. As PP said, having 3u3 is definitely an adventure! :-)

  • Update! I finally busted out the X-rider for our quick trip to Target today and it was great! I made a big deal about how he'd get to ride in his own special seat in the stroller and he was happy with that. But man, we sure did get a lot of attention.
