Same as the boy name poll, only with the top 10 girl names. If you HAD TO pick one which would you choose? (They are ranked in order of popularity from 2012, according to the Social Security Administration.) Side note: I find it funny that the top five all end in "A."
It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

  • DD's name is Ava. :-) Still love it even though it BLEW UP in popularity as we chose it.

It's such a pretty name! If I loved a name prior to it becoming super popular, it wouldn't stop me from using it. :) (Unless I had really close friends or family members using it for their kids . . . then I might reconsider.)

  • I have a tie! lol! one of my twins is Emily, and if we have another girl she will be Abigail! I didn't mean to like such popular names, I just really love classic, not trendy names that will age well. And I guess Emily and Abigail are trendy right now, they are still classics.

  • Our girl name is Avadelle (it's a family name) but we are going to shorten it to Ava.
  • Olivia is my sister's name and it's fantastic.  It's just a shame it's had a come back.  I would have used it.

  • I actually love a lot of these names and wpuld consider using a few of them. We loved Olivia, but a cousin just had a daughter and used it. I love Mia, Emma, and Ava as well.

But if we have a girl we've decided on Abigail.

  • As someone who lives with a former top 10 name (It was even #1 for a while) I could never name my child one of these popular names. I absolutely think some of these names are adorable but trust me, it sucks having a super popular name. I had a class in high school that had five of us with the same name. Five! There were only about 20 people in the the entire class. Yeah, no fun.

I totally understand where you're coming from. I had a fairly popular name, there were five of us in my small graduating class. It didn't bother me as much as having a name with an alternate spelling.

In elementary school I was in a class of 25 with NINE Christophers and three Christens. It was nuts.

  • I love Isabella and Olivia, but my SIL used both for her daughters. I had had Isabella chosen in my mind since I was about 14.

I didn't even have a top 10 name, I think it might have been top 20 in the 90's and I still had 5 different Megan's on my field hockey team in high school!  It was a little crazy, but overall didn't bother me too much.

See?! You can never escape the popular name lol! I like to think that it doesn't bother me as much now as it did growing up but when DH and I were first discussing possible names for this lo, every time he threw a top ten name out there I immediately vetoed it so I clearly still harbor some negative feelings on the subject.
  • I voted Emily since it is our girl pick.  I dislike that it's a top 10, but I honestly do not know of any Emilys, so maybe it's not that popular around here.  Besides, sometimes you can choose a name that isn't all that known, and then it blows up not long after you choose it.  This happened with both of my friend's sons (Mason & Nolan).

  • My DD's name is Olivia and I've loved the name for years. I'm a fan of traditional type names. I was born in 1984 and my name was #1, Jessica. It never bothered me to have a popular name.

  • There is nothing *wrong* with these names -- I just really don't want to name our kids something that a ton of others in their class might have. Our top names are both around #140-ish on the top names list; they are "classic/traditional" names that still aren't overly common, like my name and DH's name.

  • None of them are my style...probably cause im an odd ball like that.
  • My name is Elizabeth, and despite it having been popular for years, I've only met a handful if other Elizabeths (and only encountered one other during school). It must depend where you live (e.g. some geos may have a higher density of Sophias than another), but I was never too bothered having a "popular" name.

  • DD is Mia and was coming up on the top 10 in 2008 but I had no idea, just loved the name. Also there are no other Mia's around here. We've met some here and there but there haven't been any in her daycare. I chose Ava for this poll.

  • I picked Emma, which is cute. None of those are really my style though.

My name is Amanda which was an extremely popular name for girls born in the 80s. There was always at least one other one in my class growing up, sometimes as many of 4 of us in a class. It really wasn't that big a deal. That being said, I typically prefer names that aren't super popular.

  • Elizabeth is more than likely this LO's name if baby is a girl.
I don't care about popularity I don't personally know anyone named Elizabeth and I love it.

We are having a girl, and her name will be Elizabeth. I haven't met any around here, so I didn't realize it was this popular.

  • Isabella is actually our girl name, named after my great grandmother Bella. I'm not thrilled with how popular it is now, but the name is really important to me.
