Madison's birth story...

A week ago today I gave birth to a beautiful little girl... Madison Grace, 5 lbs 7 oz. and 18.25 inches. She is absolutely perfect and we are so in love.

I had been having a ton of BH contractions and as I got closer to 37 weeks, they got more and more uncomfortable. On 3/21 I had my 37 week appointment (technically I was 36/6) and due to her heart rate being elevated (170-180), the strapped me up to the monitor. Luckily it was just due to her movement; however, I was having contractions every 1-2 minutes but only felt 2 during the half hour or so I was hooked up. I was 3 cm and 50% effaced for a week now, but my doctor sent me home since the contractions obviously weren't creating any changes and told me to make my 38 week appointment just in case, but that she didn't think I'd make it another week.

On Thursday 8/22 I was feeling those contractions every 1-2 minutes all day. They weren't painful; however, they created strong "tightness". Finally at about 6 p.m. I decided to call my doctor and get her advise. DD1 was a very quick labor (4.5 hours) and we were all nervous that this labor could go so fast that I may deliver in the car - literally. She advised I go to the hospital to get checked and be on the safe side. I just had a feeling I'd be sent home and spent approximately 6 hours in triage on the monitors and being checked. At about 1 a.m. I had only progressed to about 4 cm, but my doctor asked that I be moved to a delivery room and start the rounds of antibiotics as I tested positive for GSB. Between the antibiotics I walked the halls but by 6 a.m., only progressed to 5 cm. My doctor came in and said I was in labor, but it did not appear to be active labor yet as I wasn't progressing very fast, so I was given the option to go home or have her break my water. She recommended to break my water because if I did go home and it happened there, she didn't believe I would make it back to the hospital in time to deliver. I opted to have my water broken because I did not want DD1 to see me in labor/pain and be scared. Right after the decision was made, she broke my water and things went quick. Within an hour the anesthesiologist was in to start my epidural because I was in rediculous pain from the contractions. He had to stop several times during my contractions, which my nurse later said based on the contractions and how I was reacting (sweating, heavy breathing, etc) she knew at that point I was probably 9 cm already. The anesthesiologist gave a test shot to make sure I had no reactions, which I didn't luckily. Then my nurse checked me before starting the actual epidural and I was 9.5-10 cm. My doctor came in, they got the room ready and within 3 pushes, Madison entered the world. While I was comfortable, I was able to feel everything to a degree because I never got the actual epidural anesthesia, just the spinal block. And although she came at 37 weeks, 1 day, she is perfect... feeding great, no jaundice, and so laid back compared to DD1. The first night she even slept for 5.5 hours for us (I thought the nurse forgot about us to wake up to feed her, but she said during the first 24 hours they are more relaxed with the feedings because the babies tend to sleep more and don't eat a lot anyways). She is truly a blessing to our family and such a little doll.
