UTI antibiotic while breastfeeding

Anyone have a uti and take an antibiotic while breastfeeding?

I had to go to an urgent care to get a prescription today since both my ob and gp wouldn't be able to until after the holiday and no way I was going through the weekend with a uti. Anyway the doc knew I was breastfeeding and said the prescription was ok for baby but after filling the Rx and looking it up I've read mixed reviews especially for younger babies. But there's always the risk of just a general reaction to the medication which I'm also worried about even though there's that possibility for any meds taken that's transferred through bf.

Think ill start it tomorrow but I'm just worried about not catching it if LO has any side effects =\

They never test meds on babies, pregnant women or breast feeding women because it isn't ethical. Instead, they classify them in groups which the doctor uses to decide if the benefits outweigh the risks. I'm sure it is fine, but if you're in doubt still call your OB and ask to talk to a nurse- you won't need an appointment for that.

  • I would just call the pediatrician and ask if he/ she is ok with that medication. It can't hurt.
  • What's the med?
  • @LEMSA the med is bactrim ds, the generic form of it

  • Make sure to take a probiotic while you're on the antibiotics to prevent thrush. The refrigerated ones are best.

  • Yea that's another worry thrush and a yeast infection which I know are both common after taking abtibiotics
