Home Daycare Costs?

Hi Ladies, I'm due in December and looking to get our child into a home daycare (most likely) and have a couple questions based on your experience.

1) What's the average cost per week for home daycare?  A few actual daycare centers I briefly looked at, averaged around $385/week.  Figured home daycares would be under that.

2) Do home daycares seem to be more flexible in schedules?  I was granted the ability to work from home two days a week once I come back from maternity leave, and I'd like to keep our child home with me those two days, just curious if home daycares will work with you on that (ie, just charge for three days instead of five full ones)

I am actually meeting with a local home daycare on Friday, so I'm just kind of wanting to prepare myself for the numbers that will be thrown at me.

Re: Home Daycare Costs?

  • I looked at in-home daycare options in the city.  I found that the in-home daycare, where it was a SAHM with her own child plus a few more, not a home daycare with multiple teachers, were more likely to accept a child part-time than the centers where you pay for your spot.  However, they were also more likely to charge an hourly rate, which has been about $10 an hour on average.  So if you need to child there 50 hours a week to accommodate your commute time, it would be closer to $500 a week.  But if your LO is only there 3 days a week, you might end up coming out on top.  However, it probably depends on what area you're looking at. We're on the northwest side of the city.

  • I met with the woman this morning, she runs her own home daycare, with several assistants.  They are willing to do part time and the rates were great.  3x a week, $195, 5x a week was $290.  She can't confirm any spot for me until at least January, so I have to check back in with her then, but I was pleasantly surprised by the rate.  She seemed flexible on many things (the possibility where some weeks I have to be in my office 5x, and she said as long as she had staffing to support another kid those days, not a problem)  I'm on the north side of the city, Andersonville area.
