Gender Reveal at 18 weeks...Thoughts???

I am 20 weeks today and we had our last ultrasound at 18 weeks and 1 day. My doctor doesn't plan on scanning me again until mid October. They did measurements and blood flow scans then as well. They didn't get a perfect shot of the face, which I remember the tech saying...she might wanna rescan for a better shot of the face. Should I ask for another scan before that to recheck development and gender?? Can the gender be questionable at that stage?? She told me she saw no boy parts at all. We go back for a regular appt on Sept 12th. Advice pleace??

Re: Gender Reveal at 18 weeks...Thoughts???

  • If there are no boy parts...then your baby is most likely a girl. I'm no OB..but I've learned that boy's body parts can show as early as 13 weeks...but also can change too! My OB told me he saw something at 13 weeks. I Confirmed at 19 weeks again and it is  a boy with his growing genitals. Those little boy parts certainly stayed hehe. If you are anxious about gender...there are ultra sound places where you pay out of pocket for 2d/3d/4d from $25-75. You can do 2d from 13 weeks-26weeks. 26weeks and on you can do the 3d/4d.  I did that on my 18th week. But as far as the development..if your doctor feels the need to do a rescan then he/she will contact you.  If not then I wouldnt worry and just wait. Good luck <3

  • If they offer you a rescan you can ask for a quick check on the sex at that time but, don't ask for another ultrasound from the office. They are not there to tell you the sex, they are there to check for the baby's health.

The other and much easier option is to go to an elective ultrasound place if you really want to know.

  • I'm trying to figure out what your baby's face has to do with your baby's other bits. Actually, I'm confused by this post in general.

If she couldn't get a good shot of your LO's face, it's probably because of positioning. Not really something to worry about. I had my anatomy scan at about 16-17 weeks and the tech was able to see DS's face and boy parts just fine. When I opted to have the 4D scan at 28 weeks, the tech could still see the face and penis.

This last ultrasound, she couldn't see his face because of how he's positioned.

  • I too wonder why they didn't try to look for gender parts at 18 weeks.  I just returned from my ultrasound.  i'm 18 weeks + a few days.  (I'm having a GIRL!!)  It was obvious to the technician....and apparently to DH.  If there were no boy parts at 18 weeks, you're likely having a girl too.  Occasionally, the ultrasounds can be wrong, but usually they're accurate.  Technicians see these parts all of the time.

  • It's not true that no boy parts = girl.  You need to see the labia to be sure.

That kind of looks like my baby girls ultrasound.  I know at my OB office you can pay $30 to have a quick gender scan.  Maybe your office does something like that.
