Premie clothing?

Is it inevitable that im going to need premie clothing? Stores around me do not really have good selections and I realy don't know where to look. I heard of multiple facebook swap pages, but hacen't found any on my own. What was your experience? With my singleton, we went a week in newborn, but im not sure if that is how it will be with premie sizes.

Re: Premie clothing?

  • My two were born at 4lb 9oz and 5lb and dropped to 4lb 3oz at their smallest. During their two weeks in the NICU, they wore newborn and they were swimming in them, but it worked. We had a couple preemie sleepers once they came home, but could have made newborn work.

If I had to do it over again, I would still skip the preemie. At 3 1/2 months my little girl can still wear newborn, so I'm glad I invested in plenty of newborn sized clothes.

  • Our boys were born at 37w2d, 5lbs 8oz and 5lbs 16oz - They were thin enough that the preemie clothes were baggy on them - but they were so tall that they could hardly straighten their legs in them. If you get a few preemie outfits, might be good to get two-piece pants/onesies, just in case.

I would personally skip the premie clothes. My SIL gave us a couple of cute premie outfits but those are the only ones that we had and they grew out of them very quickly. My girls were 5lbs 13 oz and 5lbs 10 oz when they were born but they both dropped to just under 5 lbs in the NICU. I just bought Gerber newborn size as Gerber clothes tend to run small. They were a little big on them when they were a little below/around 5lbs but it wasn’t bad.
  • We used preemie for about 2 weeks after thry came home from their 13day NICU stay. They were 5lbs and 5lbs 8oz and came home just a few oz over birthweight.

They're still in NB at 2 mo. My bigger one is a bit shy of 10lb and will most likely be making the jump to 0-3 in a week or so.

My MIL bought us a small selection of preemie clothes, so it was useful to have but not essential.

  • I bought a few premie clothes after my scans indicated that my boys were very small. But even at 5lb 9 oz and 4 lb 12 oz they were too long for premie. They swam in NB but it was ok.

Carters runs long and thin, so that was all we used.

  • I have a few preemie gowns because I figure they should fit even if babies are long and my mom bought a couple of sleepers.

Do they actually need clothes in NICU? I figured I probably wouldn't dress them until we take them home.

Once the girls got moved to the progressive care unit of the NICU and had their IVs removed, we were able to bring them clothes and blankets to use. It wasn’t necessary but it was nice to see them/have them wear something other than the hospital white shirts.
  • My boys were 7lbs each at birth and took no time growing out of their newborn clothes, so twins do not always mean tiny babies.  I would try to find smaller newborn clothes (not all brands fit the same).  Gerber makes really tiny newborn stuff that isn't quite premie size.

  • Mine were both 6lbs6oz when they were born and didn't fit in the preemie outfits but I still had two on hand (that I got as a shower gift) just in case.. I personally wouldn't spend much, if any, money on them. If your babies happen to need them you will have a few days to send someone to the store to pick up a few gowns. They can wear hospital gowns while still in the hospital. Hopefully it's all a moot point because you will have happy, healthy, full term babies!

  • We found a few things at target, Walmart, and belk. You have to look for them, and the selection isn't that great, but you can occasionally find things. Honestly though, I wouldn't get a bunch of them. Even if they start out needing them, they'll outgrow them pretty quick. And as others have said, newborn clothes can work depending on how they're made.
  • They won't need clothes in the NICU and if they are in the NICU you have time to have someone bring preemie clothes to you if needed before you bring the babies home. You can also buy a few outfits and leave the tags on and either return them or have someone wash them for you if you end up needing them.

I needed a couple of preemie outfits for my babies. The problem with waiting until the last minute is that the stores change their inventory way before the season is up. My babies were born in January and all of the Spring clothes were out in Carters so I couldn't find any warm preemie outfits.

  • I didn't read everyone else's responses, so apologies if I'm being redundant. Our girls were 5,5 and 5,8 at birth and swam in NB. They wore the same few preemie thing we had from Carter's for the 1st 2 or so weeks before being able to fit in NB. FWIW, Carter's is having a huge Labor Day sale right now and has cute preemie stuff.

  • I wouldn't buy preemie clothing ahead of time, especially if you have someone who is willing to shop after the babies are born. My girls were 4.13 and 6.2 and we used preemie clothing for both for a month and an additional month for my peanut. My mom and MIL found things at Walmart, Kmart and on Craigslist.
