Preemie baby - feeding issues

My son was born at 30 weeks. He was discharged from the NICU at 36 weeks. (He's 38 weeks on Sept 2) Upon discharge, the nurses said he shouldn't go more than 4 hours without eating. Because of the NICU, he's on a pretty consistent schedule (every 3 hours), however - there are a few nights when he is PASSED out! When I wake him up to feed him, he is so sleepy and won't eat much. It also takes us forever to get him back down. When I let him wake up on his own, he'll sometimes go up to 5 (and even 6 on one occasion) hours without eating. Do I let him sleep or do I wake him up??

Re: Preemie baby - feeding issues

  • I'm not sure from expierence as we are not quite there yet with our daughter but from what I've been told is that they need to be woken up. That's what the nurses say. Could be different in your case but they just keep stressing even tho they are 'x' age they are technically a new born. (The whole actual versus adjusted)

  • I would think that a baby that young should be woken up every 3-4 hours. How's his weight?

I'd do the best you can... has he seen his pediatrician yet? We went home from the NICU with an order to feed every 3 hours... the ped agreed when we saw her the next day....but went back a week later and she was happy enough with weight gain that we then changed to on demand. Although now DD eats every 2! Lol
  • Have you scheduled a day with your pediatrician? My nurse on discharge told me that I could call up to the NICU if I had questions before my ped appt. if you have I would call my ped. It doesn't sound right. And I think you should trust your motherly instincts. With that being said, my son has not eaten full feeds on two occasions but he has never gone more than 4 hrs, he wakes up before then. I would deff find out before he starts losing weight. Don't worry though I don't want tot scare you just find out. I'm no nurse just momma of a preemie. I know it would be normal for a newborn but not sure about preemie. My nurse told me not to let them go past 4 hrs as well.
