April 2014 Moms

Anyone else's doctor making them wait for an ultrasound?

I am 6w4d today. I went in for my first appointment this morning (meet and greet, urine, blood work) but my doctor is making me wait 6 more weeks (October 10th) for the next appointment and first ultrasound. I find this strange because I had my first ultrasound with my son (now 9) and my daughter (now 6) at around 6 weeks and I also miscarried this past November in the middle of my 6th week. I would feel so much better if he would schedule one sooner due to the previous miscarriage and I don't understand why I have to wait until I'm 12 weeks to get my first ultrasound. Is this happening to anyone else? I have seen a ton of posts from other moms getting their first ultrasounds already. I feel so left out :(

It's pretty pretty standard.  I had a miscarriage in april and if it weren't for my irregular cycle I wouldn't have my first ultrasound until 20 weeks.

  • Wow! That's way too long to wait. I would think that doctors would do early ultrasounds for those of us who have lost before just to make sure all is well and ease our minds a little. I guess I'm stuck being a nervous wreck for 6 more weeks. Hopefully they will call and let me know that the bloodwork shows my hormones at normal levels. That will ease my worries some.
  • It's normal to wait if there is no reason to have an early scan, but usually a history of loss is reason enough. Did you ask for one? I called and told them I was very anxious with my mc history (in may of this year) and they scheduled me for an ultrasound right away.

  • I have to wait until I am 20 weeks for my first ultrasound.
  • ^That's a choice you make if you decide to forego the NT scan at 12 weeks.

  • They know about my miscarriage but I didn't request one because I was sure they would schedule one sooner than 12 weeks. I found out at the end of my appointment that my next visit would be in another 6 weeks. I saw a post from earlier about one mom going to another women's clinic for a free ultrasound after not getting one at her OB visit. I will check and see if there is one in my area. Maybe it has to do with insurance. My insurance only pays for one ultrasound in the first trimester and one in the second. 20 weeks sounds WAY too long for a first ultrasound. I'm sorry you are having to wait that long Charlyse.
  • I have to wait until 11 weeks.

  • My doctor only does one at 20 weeks. She doesn't give other options. Now if she thought there was an issue she would do one earlier. I should note that we see a midwife and they are much more hands off with medical equipment.
  • Thanks for responding everyone. I was worried because I saw so many first u/s posts today and I was really hoping to get to see that little heartbeat flicker on the screen soon. Good luck to you all! And for those of us having to wait, we'll all hang in there together I guess!!!!!
  • Wow Ghost Monkey did you really find it necessary to be that mean about it??? I never said I was special and/or trying to "abuse" the technology or that I was trying to get a daily ultrasound. I simply asked if anyone else is having to wait. Get your hormones in check. There is no reason to get nasty on people's posts.

Exactly the same for me. Kinda a bummer but it is actually forcing me to be really chill about the whole thing. Obviously the doc thought everything is ok, so why should I worry? No heart beat at 8 weeks either, but hopefully at my 9 1/2 week appt Tues!
  • Agree! And believe me, no one thinks they are "special" because they had a loss. Lots of women who have had a previous loss are given an early ultrasound. She wasn't looking for daily entertainment.

  • Thank you homediva! I thought we were here to support each other not attack each other. We are all in this together and every single one of us has different worries and issues we are dealing with No need for hatefulness!
  • I understand that but I am new to this site and haven't seen any other posts about it yet. This is my first post on here.  Miscarriage aside, I had an U/S at 6 weeks with my other two and that was why I was asking. Sorry if my post irritated anyone. I was just curious.
  • I don't have my first appt until 12 weeks... but I've had bleeding so they might see me sooner.

You asked a valid question. You didn't seem like you were asking for special treatment, just curious. We are here to support each other, we do not all come in with the same background knowledge. Ask away! Some people just feel the need to put their negativity out there. Just ignore it.
  • Wow some pretty rude unnecessary responses huh...you did not irritate anyone girl and even if you did who cares right? They will be ok. I understand you wanting a ultrasound, I was the same way! It's an excited thing. Not to mention some of us can't go that long wondering if our baby is developing properly. It does not mean you want special treatment of any kind, it simply means you want the best treatment for your child from the starting line, and there is nothing wrong with that ;)
  • Totally normal. Most early ultrasounds, as PPs have said, are for high risk. Consider yourself normal, low risk and hang on for the ride! (My first US is at 12 weeks and its for testing, not really for us to see baby. That's just a bonus. Don't even see the midwife for my first appt until 10 wks.) as for wanting the best treatment, in my mind, US in early pregnancy for low risk, is similar to wanting your blood taken once a month when your healthy just to check and make sure you're healthy. Unnecessary for everyone. It's gonna be all fine!

  • Here it's pretty standard only to have the anatomy scan at around 20 weeks. Dating u/s are not standard at all.

  • I have my first ultrasound at 10 weeks.  The doctor said this ultrasound isn't really necessary, but most women like to 'see' the baby.  I had my first appointment last week, and will have my next one at 12 weeks.
  • I had my first appointment yesterday at 8w5d and my ob did a quick transvaginal ultrasound in the exam room just to measure the baby and make sure there was a heartbeat. It took her less than five minutes but it put me so at ease to know everything is well with my little one. There is no need for a big fancy ultrasound with a tech and anatomy scan this earlier but I think a quick look with a portable ultrasound machine is reasonable and should be given to anyone who wants it, especially with a history of a loss.
