Umbrella stroller--age?

DS is 4 1/2 months old and sits up quite well, but can't do it independently for very long yet. He doesn't like his car seat with base as a stroller because he doesn't want to be in a reclining position any more. (The bouncer and the swing are now both evil too.) My question is: when can I try him in a stroller that seats him more upright? Do I need to wait until 6 months, or can I give it a go with an umbrella stroller now? I know they don't provide that much support--thus my question. Thanks for any advice!

Re: Umbrella stroller--age?

  • We visited ILs over the weekend and all they had was an umbrella stroller so we gave it a try. We found that it had a slight recline, which was enough additional support for her since she is holding her head up and supporting herself pretty well these days. ILs took her for a few short walks and she talked the whole time and didn't seem bothered in the least. She looked pretty comfortable so I didn't worry about it.

  • I put him in the 'big kid ' part of our britax travel system and it works out really well. The back is adjustable so I can set it to recline more and I have the straps tight (it has the same type of harness as the car seat but no chest clip) so it helps keep him sitting upright. He loves being able to see everything I see and it still feels secure.
  • I don't have an umbrella stroller, but I've been putting him in the "big kid" part of the City Mini for about a month. I use a pair of elephant ears (https://www.babyelephantears.com/) to keep his head from flopping over when he inevitably decides to nap.
  • We use the umbrella stroller with a cushion type thing that helps support her head a little. We just walk up and down the street while older ds rides his bike. It's by kiddopotumus or summer infant called a snuzzler.

  • I've been using our jogging stroller for most of the summer - just have it reclined all the way back. We have an umbrella stroller but it is not reclined much at all, and there's no protection from the sun and wind, so I'm not using it yet.

  • I've been putting LO in the forward facing position in her 4Moms stroller for about a month and a half now. I have it reclined as far as it will go and she hasn't had any issues with it. She LOVES being able to see more when we go for walks.

  • I was thinking of trying ours out in the fall... Right now it's still pretty warm and I don't want her to get a sunburn.
  • Thanks for all the answers, everyone! It looks like I should get a stroller with a good harness and some reclinability if I want to go this route sooner rather than later.
