Twin question

With all the twin posts I'm petrified of having twins. I have a 1 year old DD and we only plan on 2 kiddos. We didnt use fertility drugs and they dont run in our family so realistically the odds are with us. Which brings me to my question. How many of you carrying multiples happened without fertility drugs? If so, do twins run in your family or was it a complete shock??

Re: Twin question

  • Mine were natural (no drugs). None on either side. they are identical.... (which is not genetic).

  • It looks like from the poll i made just 5% of these women are having twins. They just post a lot because its exciting. Also, I looked it up and 1 in every 89 babies conceived naturally are twins. So you have only roughly a little over a 1% chance of having twins.

I was in the same boat you are.  One DS, only planning on having 2 kids. Surprise!  Mine were conceived naturally, without medical intervention.  I am 34, and will be 35 when they are born, which puts me solidly at AMA status.  That might have something to do with it, as sometimes, when you get toward the end of your fertile years, your body can start spitting out multiple eggs to increase he odds of reproducing..  I have no idea if they are identical or fraternal.

ETA:  Twins do not run on my side of the family, though apparently they do on my husbands side.  His grandmother lost 2 sets of twins in pregnancy.

  • I totally love the idea of twins but I would need a new car haha.

I know I have 1 sac but I'm not sure how many babies. Most likely 1... but my hcg levels multiplied at closer to a twin rate than a single although that isn't a science
  • Mine are natural. I am 35 so maybe my ovaries are in over drive?

  • Mine were natural as well. No twins on either DH side or mine. My ob is pretty sure they are identical, which he says are completely random. It was a bit of a shock for us. I was surprised just seeing the first baby (DH and I both knew that a chemical pregnancy or miscarriage could have happened before our first appointment)
  • Adding to the OPs question, did any of you have an inkling or certain physical symptoms that clied you in you had conceived twins?
  • I agree, I have a 16 mo old son. I'm 38 so petrified that the odds are greater over 35. Twins sounded fine when I knew I wanted two close in age. But now that I will have a 2 year old when LO arrives I'm certain I could not handle two newborns and a toddler.

You pretty much described me. Only difference between you and I is that I am an identical twin. Twins run in both me and my boyfriend's families so I'm praying there is just one little one in there. Oh yeah and I'm 22 as well. My boyfriend has a set of twins already too!
  • Identical twins or twins on the fathers side don't make a difference in odds. The "good" news is, even if your odds are elevated for whatever reason, odds are still heavily against twins for most people.

I had no idea. I haven't even had any morning sickness (knock on wood)
  • FTM and I am having twins naturally, the only twins on my sides are my uncles who passed away a day after a pre-mature birth. My husbands grandma's sister had twins but I feel like that is too long of a connection. I think sometimes God just has a plan of his own!

I haven't had any morning sickness either yet! I just thought I was showing faster (even though mostly bloating) husband kept kidding about twins so it was on our minds...
