Meal Time Drama

For about a week now we've had major meal time drama.  DS has always been a good eater, but he's a kid who I have to save the fruit for last or that's all he will eat.  I think he's figured me out and knows the "better stuff" is coming.  He has had major meltdowns where he slams his hands on his tray, yells, and throws his food.  I've been ignoring it and eventually he will eat his veggies and whatever else is on his tray.
I've tried putting the fruit out with the rest of his food and he eats it first then throws his fit.  Any other ideas?  Am I doing the right thing to ignore it?  I'm feel like I'm winging it and don't want to do anything to "ruin" his eating habits or to make meals stressful for him.

Re: Meal Time Drama

  • We had this problem too.  We solved it with no more fruit at dinner.  At all.  It took about a week for her to go back to being a normal dinner eater.  She gets fruit with breakfast and lunch, and with dinner she can have vegetables.  For dessert she gets a few yogurt drops instead of fruit now.  It was just mealtime anarchy at our house.

Awesome, we will give that a try. Thank you!

We're having a similar problem. She's just generally crazy at meal time, and is constantly throwing food on the floor for the dog, whether the dog is in the room or not. No advice, just commiserating.

@BPer, I've thought this for a long time, but this confirms it:  we have the same kid.  And for me it's a little creepy because Hannah was our girl name.

Crazy, high-needs babies. I try to tell myself that she'll just be super intelligent some day.

  • Same as @mrsManny except our problem isn't fruit -its yogurt drops! :)  So I just stopped giving them to her - now she either gets ALL yogurt drops or NONE.  So I have a seperate snack time that is for yogurt drops - lame but thats the way we roll.  FYI - she still is a freak and turns her head and whines - but I'm trying to be really good about - here is what you are eating (all at once) and thats it.  Instead of the- here is a cracker to hold you over while I prep the other stuff - ok now here is some veggies - ok now some meat - because I'm learning she's decided to whine until I pull out something she likes.  And that needs to stop .. the whinning .. oh the whinning..
