Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sleep

My baby girl is 4 months old and exclusively breastfed. For the past month, she has been up every 1.5 or 2 hours and by up, I mean wakes up crying. She sleeps in her crib at first, then after the second wake up, I have her in bed with us. I am so tired and getting emotional. How can I get her to sleep longer?

Re: Sleep

  • I have no idea. I'm in the same boat as you and ready to just collapse. All I can offer is my sympathy
  • Loading the player...
  • i know if it is too hard breakdown and pump and feed her it may put a little more in her tummy and give you and her more sleeptime because you dont want the stress transferred from you to her and if pumping is something that is a no for you all then i really send my sympathy and love to u all and hope it gets better

  • Have you tried other ways of soothing her other than BFing? Or do you know that she's waking because she's hungry?

Although some people say 4 months old is too young for sleep training, you might want to read up on some techniques. I personally recommend the No Cry Sleep Solution because I don't like CIO, but you may find other techniques you like better.

  • maybe try going through a check list of what is waking her and making her cry?  try experimenting with her wearing different sleep clothes.  try one night with warmer clothes,  one with less clothes etc.

i dont know why it took so long for us to figure this out but we just started using a little nightlight in our LOs room and we put a dim red bulb in it and his sleep has improved dramatically.  i think he was waking up scared in the dark.

also, have you tried white noise or a fan to make some noise?   that can be comforting too.   good luck to you!

I agree with kathie. Perhaps she isnt getting enough. My LO will nurse every hour from 7-10 to "fill up" before bed time then sleep about 7 hours.

  • You can't. Just follow her cues and eventually things wil get better
  • I am in the same boat!! Until 3 months my LO slept great at night.... Once 3 mo hit she only goes 1.5-2 hours at a time :( the other night she was up every 45 minutes. I just don't know what to do either..... I am so exhausted I get so weak I am scared to lift my LO.
I know this too shall pass, but when!?!?

At that age you really do what you can to make her happy and get her to sleep. There is nothing wrong with bringing her in bed with you or nursing her to make her happy. IMO it will not create a bad habit. It's a REALLY TOUGH age and you just have to get through it.

There isn't a miracle cure for getting them to sleep longer at that age except time. Look up "4 month wakeful". That might be what she's going through. At least you'll have some info.
