Short cervix and bed rest

At my 25 week appt, should've been 24, my cervix was measuring between 2.5 to 3.8. I came back in 4 days later and they did an FFN, which was negative, and then did an ultrasound to measure cervical length. It was funneling down to 0.98cm, but was shortening and lengthening while we watched. A dynamic cervix. I had the same thing in my first pregnancy at 27 weeks. The CL with my first was 1.7cm.

They gave me steroid injections, indocin to stop contractions and I switch to procardia today. The doc was talking hospital bed rest but I don't want to be away from my kids or stuck in a hospital for the next 8 weeks! If it is not completely necessary, that is. This is what happened during my first pregnancy, as well, only there was no mention of HBR and my cervix was not quite so short. My first was delivered hours after his due date. I had no issues with my second, a girl. But my boy pregnancies my cervix goes wonky!

What was your experience with shortening/funneling?

Re: Short cervix and bed rest

  • I am currently on week 2 of HBR for a shortened cervix with funneling. Last Wednesday my cervix measured 1.5 with funneling down to 1.2. I have been on Procardia (still am), Indocin (48 hours), and magnesium (24 hours) to slow down contractions. We measured my cervix again yesterday due to all the contractions and luckily it was 2.0.

Since this is my first pregnancy, I have nothing to compare it to. You may want to check the high risk biard since there are lots of women doing home bed rest for the same. I just felt better staying here. My inlaws have helped out with caring for my 9 yo stepdaughter so my husband could be here with me. I have been told that I will be here until 28 weeks (minimum) so I am just biding my time.

  • It's a scary time. I'm on mobile so I can't see how far along you are, although I do remember we are both due in Nov. 28 weeks is the first major milestone as far as lifelong disabilities from prematurity, as I'm sure every multiple mom is aware! LOL I'm 26 weeks 2 days. Aug 13th will be 28 weeks. We can be bed rest buddies! :D

  • I just got put in bed rest yesterday. No funneling yet. No contractions either. Started me on progesterone and BR until u/s next Tuesday. Cervix went from 2.7 to 2.04. Still closed and firm so I guess that's a good thing. I'm only 20w so babies have a long way to go. Wishing the best for you ladies too!

  • I had issues with PTL (contractions, dilation) starting at 23 weeks and then cervical shortening starting at 27-28 weeks. My cervix went from 3.5 to under 1 in less than a week. I bounced back and forth between hospital and home bed rest from 23 weeks until I delivered at 34 weeks. Procardia never worked for me, but I do believe the progesterone supps helped. I did have the steroid shots at 24 weeks and again at 30 weeks. My boys did both come out crying, and only one needed breathing assistance for less than 48 hours. Those were the longest 11 weeks but worth every miserable moment. I have two healthy 9 month olds now!

Sending lots of baby cooking vibes to you, sweetie.

  • Hang in there! I know it seems like you're next milestone is forever away but it will be here before you know it!

I'm on MBR due to a shortened cervix and PTL, I'm 29 wks & 1 day. I measured less than 1 on Monday but measured at 1.9 yesterday. I am only on procardia right now & that seems to be helping. This is my third pregnancy and I've never had a problem with a short cervix before, only PTL.
  • Positive outcome here!
I had some PTL issues beginning at week 16 with my twins. My cervix was 3.0 no funneling. At 20 weeks I was a 1.7 with lots of funneling.
I started SBR and progesterone, no cerclage, and received steroid shots at 24 and 32 weeks.
Between weeks 22 and 35 I remained at a 2.0 and much to my doctors amazement my funneling got better and better as the weeks progressed and was completely gone by 33 weeks.
At 35w6d my water broke and I delivered two healthy baby girls at 5lb 10oz and 5lb 13oz. They had no issues, no nicu, and both came home with us and are now in 86th percentile for height and weight at 5mo old! Stay positive and take bed rest seriously!

  • I was on bed rest for short cervix and ptl from 21-35w, induced at 36/4 and delivered 2 healthy girls at 36/5. No NICU needed. Bed rest is no fun but it's worth it!

  • I am 23 weeks (3rd pregnancy) with a  CL of 1.5 as of one week ago. Since my 1st son was being born at 26 weeks gestation (he was just fine) my doc put me on 17P shots at 16 weeks. Now i am sad bc my 2nd child was full term with No problems but...not the case. I went to my 19 week check up and found out my cervix were opening CL was 1.0 so i was sent straight to hospital for a cerclage. I went home on bedrest. One week later my CL was 2.3, but.....a week after that it went bk down to 1.8 week after that, 1.5 soooo im getting shorter even with bedrest and 200 mg progesterone suppositories. Doc says i prob would have delivered by now without meds and cerclage soooo i go to the doc again this week and keeping my faith in God. Reading ever1's post makes me feel better. Keeps my spirits up while on bedrest. Best wishes to ever1. God is good keep faith
  • wow. These stories make me feel somewhat better. Today is day 1 with a toddler and bed rest, don't know how this is going to work.
