April 2014 Moms

So, I told my boss today...

Needless to say, she was less than thrilled.  It makes me feel good that she finds me as a valued team member and doesn't want to see me go out on 12 weeks of maternity leave; but I was hoping for a little better reaction.  She even asked if this will be my last!  I know it's not "perfect timing" with everything going on at work but I can't put my life on hold because of them.  And I hope they realize that I have some job protection under FMLA.

Anyone else not get the best reaction?

  • Aw man!  I am so sorry!  How did you tell her if you don't mind me asking?  I am scared to (he's the nicest ever, but it is just the two of us, so he will have to hire another team member.)!

  • Well, we've talked about it before so I'm not really sure why she was so surprised. We sold our house in the spring, are currently building a new house (to fit our new family) and I sold my small SUV in preparation of it not fitting our family.  So there's been lots of background stuff going on to get us prepared for having a third.

I was in her office this morning with some questions and as I was about to leave I got a big smile on my face and said... "so, I have some news..." She immediately knew what I was referring to.

  • I told my boss when I had to make the original doctor appoint for 6 weeks.  She was thrilled! She knew that I tried my entire marriage to get pregnant and didn't.  She squealed and jsut cant wait!
  • My boss will be happy and excited and then seconds later will say "but what about the magazine?" Like my life revolves around that crappy newsletter wrapped in a magazine cover. And as always (because EVERYTHING is "but what about the magazine? - even when I just have a playdate on a random day!), I'll quell her fears and still bust my ass to meet deadlines.

All in all, she'll be happy, but I'll have to deal with calming her down a bunch of times. Luckily she's in FL and I'm in PA, so I can choose when to tell her. I work from home, so I don't need to take time off, unless delivery happens during deadline week. Lol
  • These posts make me sad. Imagine if it was just assumed you had maternity leave, since it is law, and they just deal with it. Its amazing how easy it is to actually deal with things when you don't have a choice in the matter. Even when you're highly specialized. America, you're makin' me mad!

  • I was blessed enough to start a new job last Mon. Ive been unemployed since March. Found out im expecting on that Wed. Ill be waiting as long as possible to say anything......

  • I have a few weeks to go until I let my manager know. I'm a liitle nervous because I am up for a promotion. Hopefully that comes before I
    Give my news
  • I'm nervous to tell my boss too. I've only been at my company 8 months and this is my first time working for a man. I know he will be supportive, but I'm not looking forward to the " by the way... I'm severely high risk and will most likely be on bed rest come December". Surprise! Aren't you glad you hired me?!

Our baby boy,Logan, was born still at 19w3d on 7/1/2011
Our 2nd baby boy, Mason, was born still at 20w3d on 1/31/2012

After a much needed sanity break... we are praying for our rainbows

    ((BFP 7/29/13))  ((EDD 4/12/14))  It's BOY/GIRL twins!!!

  • I know my co-workers will all be supportive but they are all at least 20 years older then me and half are childless.  I think if I had chosen to adopt a dog things might go over better.

And It wont be said to my face but my org is undergoing a HUGE change in my dept.  It was supposed to occur Jan 1 but is now pushed back to possibly June with training in April/May.  I know its going to be an issue but I cant help it they changed their date.

Regardless, work is not my life.  I am not going to put my family hold for demands of a job. End of story.

  • I'm not telling until 13w, but I know that my boss will be thrilled to have someone on maternity leave to help with the budget (half of my 12 weeks will most likely be without pay).

I told my boss during my mid-year review. His response, "are you joking"? He can't fire me for being pregnant. but I would be happy for less stress.
But the amusing part, one of the other ladies in my department is due in January!
  • This is so completely ridiculous to me. Having a baby is the most wonderful thing in the world and for people to be so selfish about it when an employee tells them that is so rude! Even if it is frustrating to people because it is an inconvenience to them, they should keep that to themselves and be outwardly happy for the person. Just my personal opinion.
  • I told my boss, and she cried she was so happy for me. Awesome reaction!

I feel like I should be apologizing to my bosses when I tell them, because this means I'm going to be out of school right before rehearsals start for our huge end of the year shows. Which every class performs. Which I am in charge of. I won't even be able to start getting them off the ground! Oops.

If you ask me what I came to do in this world, I, an artist, I will answer you:
I am here to live out loud!
  • Oh man that sucks. I happen to work for two exceptional bosses who are just so thrilled for us. Their wives even called and are already sending baby clothes! These are people who danced at our wedding and get me huge gifts for administrative assistants day too. But I worked for dicks for along time so I can imagine a boss who wouldn't be happy. It's just so unbelievable anyone could be bitter about a baby!
  • Don't they realize happy employees that have good family time are more productive in the long run?

  • I'm sure my boss will be a total ass when I tell him... My shift will be stoked but him he's just an asshole. I recently came back after being gone 1 year and was here 5 years before that... Now he has me on 6 months probation and said that I need to be taken down a notch he's already an asshole
  • Aw these make me said. My principal was SO excited for me and keeps asking when I'm telling everyone because she's so excited and can't wait for it to not be a secret! :)
  • I am sorry you got that reaction out of your boss! My boss joked the whole time about me leaving the company to be a stay at home mom. We went as far as giving my office away while I was on maternity leave. I ended up working a few days during my maternity leave for extra cash and he made me sit in a cubicle and didn't give me my office back until I returned full time.

I am scared to tell him this time. I am sure he will assume I'm going to be a stay at home mom again when that isn't the case.

  • My boss was more excited than my parents.  True story.  He'd had a shitty week, and when I told him he said it was the best news he had all week :-)   It's going to be tough on my organization because I can't do m primary duties while pregnant (too hazardous), but I told him I was happy to take on lots of extra duties and help out wherever I can (including resuming some former duties that are now technically below my pay grade).
