Extended BF weekly check-in (8/28/13)

Welcome to the last Wednesday of the summer. I'm sad. But also happy because it's check-in time!
For the purposes of this thread nursing past one year is considered extended. Lurkers welcome. Questions are occasionally recycled.

1. How old is your LO?

2. Do you still pump? If not, when did you stop?

3. What's the longest you've been away from LO?

4. Are you back in your pre-pregnancy/pre-baby bras?

5. Non-BF question of the week: What was for breakfast today?

As always please feel free to share anything else and suggest questions for next week's thread.

Re: Extended BF weekly check-in (8/28/13)

  • 1. How old is your LO?
    Almost 2 years.

    2. Do you still pump? If not, when did you stop?
I was pumping once at work until about 14-15 months.

    3. What's the longest you've been away from LO?
The most recent trip with DS1. I was gone from Sunday afternoon to Thursday late night. So 4.5 days.

    4. Are you back in your pre-pregnancy/pre-baby bras?
Yes, size-wise. But no in that I no longer am able to wear underwire at all.

    5. Non-BF question of the week: What was for breakfast today?
In true LOTR fashion I had two. 1st: cheerios with yogurt. 2nd: fresh carrot juice and egg/cheese sandwich.

    1. How old is your LO?

18 months or wait whoops, 19 months!

    2. Do you still pump? If not, when did you stop?

Nope.  I stopped when DD was about 13 months old.  I was really nervous to stop but it's been fine.

    3. What's the longest you've been away from LO?

Ok don't laugh.  But other than going to work all day I've never been away from EITHER child overnight.  Honestly, the opportunity has just not come up.  We go on all family vacations together. Also since I BF both for so long I really couldn't leave them overnight either.  Soon my DH and I are thinking of doing a short weekend get away without the kids and leaving them with my mom, but we've never done it before!!!

    4. Are you back in your pre-pregnancy/pre-baby bras?

Yep.  I still wear nursing bras sometimes but I just went out and bought some nice new bras.  LOVE them.

    5. Non-BF question of the week: What was for breakfast today

Medium iced latte with skim milk from Dunkin Donuts and a wheat bagel with strawberry cream cheese.  My breakfast pretty much every day! My kids usually eat oatmeal and eggs and fruit.

As always please feel free to share anything else and suggest questions for next week's thread.

Nothing crazy going on here, except the toddler started Pre-K!!! It's very exciting.  It's only 1/2 day and she's only 3 but we are REALLY impressed with her school.
  • 1. How old is your LO?  DD will be 20mo on the 4th.

    2. Do you still pump? If not, when did you stop? I never really pumped, DD has always refused a bottle.

    3. What's the longest you've been away from LO?  I'm a SAHM and have not been away from DD for longer than 3 hours.

    4. Are you back in your pre-pregnancy/pre-baby bras?  Yes, but I need to replace them. My bras were not the right size before I got pregnant.

    5. Non-BF question of the week: What was for breakfast today?  Chocolate milk and a pop tart :)

  • 1. How old is your LO?
    15 months

    2. Do you still pump? If not, when did you stop?

Nope, stopped the week LO turned 1. We had no issues with cow's milk and we were trying to break LO of the bottle habit as well. LO didn't seem to like BM in sippies, so WCM it was!

    3. What's the longest you've been away from LO?

12 hours. I just never desired to pump all day and night. I also don't need to travel for work. But I'm going to be gone for a while weekend soon (Fri-Sun) to visit my sister. I'm both excited and nervous. LO has never gone a full 24 hrs w/o nursing. Not sure how DH and LO will handle the weekend.

    4. Are you back in your pre-pregnancy/pre-baby bras?

    Yup.

    5. Non-BF question of the week: What was for breakfast today?
Same thing it is every day. Bowl of cheerios topped with berries and some kashi and skim milk and a glass of OJ.

  • 1. How old is your LO?almost 13 months

    2. Do you still pump? If not, when did you stop? I SAH so i never really had a pumping schedule, just if I'm away for the evening or something.

    3. What's the longest you've been away from LO? Overnight, once for anniversary and once each for my birthday and DHs birthday.

    4. Are you back in your pre-pregnancy/pre-baby bras? Still wearing nursing bras, but the size never changed through pregnancy or nursing, just filled them out a bit better.

    5. Non-BF question of the week: What was for breakfast today? A blueberry pomegranate smoothie from McDonalds- had a $1 coupon!

    As
always please feel free to share anything else and suggest questions
    for next week's thread.

    2. Yes I still pump. Over the summer I only have been after DS went to sleep IF he only nursed one side or hardly nursed bc he was so tired. I'm a teacher and will be going back to work in a week. I plan on pumping once during my lunch at least to start the school year. DS has been nursing a few times during the time i'll be back at work and I feel nervous to go from a few times to none at all. I had supply issues from the start and am still on fenugreek. I know other women say they can go tons of hours and not have any issues but I worry too much to chance it. I'm a big worrier! DS is also mspi and refuses other liquids so that plays a part with pumping too.
    3. Not long - just a work day
    4. They fit but I don't wear them bc I still wear nursing bras and tanks.
    5. Blueberry oatmeal

  • 1. How old is your LO? 13 months

    2. Do you still pump? If not, when did you stop?    No.  I stopped pumping when LO was 12 months old.

    3. What's the longest you've been away from LO? 8 hours (when at work).  I have yet to leave LO for an overnight trip.

    4. Are you back in your pre-pregnancy/pre-baby bras? Yes. I did not get that much bigger when I was exclusively nursing.

    5. Non-BF question of the week: What was for breakfast today? Peanut butter toast
  • 1. 15.5 Month

    2. No, stopped at 12 months

    3.  DH and I took a 2 night trip when DS was 9 months and we've taken a handful of overnight dates.  We have another 2 night trip planned for next week.  My mom is willing to take DS overnight and DS has done great with taking milk out of a sippy.

    4. I haven't even tried them on, I just went and bought new ones, but I"m not the same size.

  • 1. How old is your LO?  Yikes, 13 months tomorrow

    2. Do you still pump? If not, when did you stop?   Yes.  I really need to wean from the pump and get back to getting work done.  But I can't get LO to drink any milk other than BM.  She was MPI for her first year, but we've had success reintroducing dairy.  But she will NOT drink cow milk, almond milk, or soy milk.

    3. What's the longest you've been away from LO? We have left her with my mom overnight once.  It was less than 24 hours, but more than 12 hours.

    4. Are you back in your pre-pregnancy/pre-baby bras? Fit wise I'm sure I could be.  But since I still BF and pump at work, I prefer the nursing bras.

    5. Non-BF question of the week: What was for breakfast today? As always (every.single.freaking.day) oatmeal with flax, nuts, and raisins.

  • 1. How old is your LO? 13 months ish

    2. Do you still pump? If not, when did you stop? I stopped around 9/10 months maybe?  It was stupid pumping for a bottle for daycare only to feed it to him myself at pick up (half days).

    3. What's the longest you've been away from LO? Work day.

    4. Are you back in your pre-pregnancy/pre-baby bras? Nope, I'm still 2 cup sizes bigger.

    4. Are you back in your pre-pregnancy/pre-baby bras? Yes

  • 1. almost 17 months

    2. No, stopped at about a year. Can't really remember when it was last time, but soooo glad to be done!

    3. I've been away from DD for a couple weekends here and there. The first time I had to pump because she was only 6 months, but now I can go the whole weekend without pumping.  I usually get a clogged duct by Sunday, but nothing too painful. I always nurse DD the minute I get home and its instant relief.

4.I feel like I could maybe wear a smaller bra now :(   but maybe they just seem smaller after having bigger breasts for almost a year.

    2. Do you still pump? If not, when did you stop? No. I stopped two days before he turned one.

    3. What's the longest you've been away from LO? Twelve hours?

    4. Are you back in your pre-pregnancy/pre-baby bras? No - they do not fit the same anymore. Plus I'm still nursing.

    5. Non-BF question of the week: What was for breakfast today? Zucchini bread with cream cheese.

Do it!!! I never take vacations without the kids but I do have to travel for work to conference 3-4 times a year and a couple of times DH was able to go with me and it was wonderful. I miss them but being able to wake up on my own, to have breakfast together without feeding anyone. Bliss.

  • 1. How old is your LO? 27 months (DS) and 3 weeks (DD)

    2. Do you still pump? If not, when did you stop?  I just started pumping again. I want to donate to a HMBANA milk bank and need to freeze 150 oz to make my first donation. I've got 8! I will also introduce a bottle to DD in the next few weeks for occasional use. I won't be back at work for about a year, so I'm not pumping for regular bottles.

    3. What's the longest you've been away from LO? DS has gone on several grandma sleep-overs of 12-36 hours. I've been gone on a business trip for 3 days/2 nights when he was 18 months (he was with daddy, though). Haven't left the baby yet. ;)

    4. Are you back in your pre-pregnancy/pre-baby bras? I don't think those were the right size to start with. And now, most definitely not. I feel like I'll be in nursing bras forever.

    5. Non-BF question of the week: What was for breakfast today? Oatmeal with raisins and walnuts. And coffee. Ahhhh, coffee.
  • 1. How old is your LO?
    19 months

    2. Do you still pump? If not, when did you stop?

no, i stopped at a year when i wasn't getting anything.

    3. What's the longest you've been away from LO?

at work for eight or nine hours

    4. Are you back in your pre-pregnancy/pre-baby bras?

I still wear nursing bras so no. BUt, my boobs shrank back down to a B but they're nothing like they were before pregnancy.

    5. Non-BF question of the week: What was for breakfast today? bacon egg and cheese sandwhich

  • @andreab7412 Mac and cheese for breakfast? Feisty. I like you.

You ladies are making me want to get some nice new bras. But it's pointless now. I guess in another year maybe. Sigh.

    2. Do you still pump? If not, when did you stop?  Thanks for posting my question! I am still pumping once a day. I am so ready to be done with it, but DS doesn't take any other milk yet and nurses a ton when I'm home  with him, so I think I'd get pretty uncomfortable going 9 hrs without pumping on work days.

    3. What's the longest you've been away from LO? I've done 1 overnight trip for work. Pumping sucked, big time. Or rather, it didn't, haha. It didn't work very well while I was away and I ended up with plugged ducts.

    4. Are you back in your pre-pregnancy/pre-baby bras? No, still nursing bras. I look forward to buying new bras.

    5. Non-BF question of the week: What was for breakfast today? Steel cut oats with maple syrup and almonds, and coffee.
  • 1. DS will be 3 years on Monday and DD is 1 week old today. I am tandem nursing.
    2. No not pumping right now but will when I return to work. Pumped at work till DS was 18 months.
    3. With DS 2 nights
    4. Nursing bras right now but prior to birth last week had been in normal bras since DS was about 2 years old.
    5. Whole wheat toast and two eggs
  • 1. How old is your LO? 27 months (DS) and 3 weeks (DD)

Nice to see someone else who is tandem nursing. Hope that is going well for you. So far so good here but when my oldest is around sure feels like there is always someone at the boob. Having a toddler nursing really helped the engorgement phase which I was thankful for.

Hey @Luv2Run1st @tokenhoser- So what else can you guys tell me about tandem nursing? I'm still on the fence but leaning towards trying to wean in a couple of months.

  • litzo27 Tandem nursing is a bit of a crazy ride. Pros: skipped every newborn nursing woe I had the first time: no nipple pain, engorgement, any discomfort, milk came in very quickly, my supply is through the roof so she nurses very quickly and has pretty much since birth Cons: DS had a nursing frenzy when she showed up, which wasn't very fun for me. He can be a bit possessive, but that could be with or without nursing. He seems HUGE now.

I've put limits on DS's nursing to keep him to three (or sometimes 4) sessions a day, and I stop those when I've had enough.

If you have any questions, I'm happy to answer. And of course "Adventures in Tandem Nursing" has lots of info and advice.

Agree with all of the above. My advice would be just do what feels right for you. DS has been good about taking turns but has been on a frenzy too. It was awesome the way baby and DS were looking at each other and holding hands while nursing together this morning but normally I nurse one at a time
  • 1. How old is your LO? 14.5 months

    2. Do you still pump? If not, when did you stop? Yes. Down to twice a day at work, and I think I'll drop it to once per day next week.

    3. What's the longest you've been away from LO? I travel occasionally for work, but am keeping it to day trips unless I can take DS along. So, the longest I've been away is about 15-16 hours.

    4. Are you back in your pre-pregnancy/pre-baby bras? Yes, but I still wear nursing tanks 99% of the time.

  • I need to visit this board more often...
    1. How old is your LO? 14months
    2. Do you still pump? If not, when did you stop? Still pump at work three times and at home twice. So afraid of lossing my supply and DD is under the 0 percentile for height and weight so the milk with the best fats and nutrients for her is mine. She is quite happy and healthy. We wonder if the growth chart is wrong. My goal was one year of breastfeeding. I made it and decided lets see how long we can go! After 1yr, I stopped stressing about getting 100% of what she needs since she will accept cow milk, but she has milk preference.

    3. What's the longest you've been away from LO? Only 8-9 hours for work. I honestly would hate to be away longer.

    4. Are you back in your pre-pregnancy/pre-baby bras? No, I love my nursing tank tops. I don't want to wear bras anymore, the tank tops are too comfortable and work great under button up collor shirts I wear for work.

    5. Non-BF question of the week: What was for breakfast today? Yesterday was carnation breakfast drink... We got up late. :-(

    3. What's the longest you've been away from LO? 8 hrs. Going to be gone for 4 nights in a few weeks while DD stays with my parents. Hope it goes well for both of us as DD is still a frequent MOTN nurser.
    4. Are you back in your pre-pregnancy/pre-baby bras? Not even close. Pre-preg I was a 34B, now I'm a 36D.

  • Ladies any advice? I go back to work on Tuesday. I nurse my one year old at 8:30, 1:15, 5, and bedtime. I am planning to nurse before I leave (around 7) and as soon as I get home which is around 3:15. Do you think my boobs will be okay? I am so nervous!!!!
  • @taryn30, I was nursing a TON when I went back at a year, and it was fine. I had BIG boobs by the end of the day and we nursed as soon as possible once I picked DS up, but I had no problems. If you haven't had issues in the past, I'd just go for it. If you have a manual pump, maybe bring it as a "just in case" - you could pump to take the edge off at lunch if you feel you need to.
  • I agree. I think you will be fine. May be full for a couple of days but not engorged. But a manual would be a back up.
