Question for STM

Just a quick question for STMs...how often should I expect my cooch to be on display (for medical reasons) throughout pregnancy?

I know I may as well get over my shyness as labor and delivery will have everyone and their brother in there with a light shining on it....but other than labor and delivery...when?

I've already had my transvaginal u/s and am far enough along that they are doing abdominal u/s now.

Re: Question for STM

  • LOl it depends on the doctor. By this time I had flashed my cooch like 9 times. This time it has not been out at all. I do have an appointment tomorrow and expecting to flash it then. I heard my new ob does not do cervical checks. Last ob I had those every freaking visit.

  • Um, a lot.  I don't remember exactly how often but near the end I had cervical checks done pretty regularly.  And like you said, just get over your shyness now, lol.  I was adamant that my mom and MIL (who were in the delivery room with us) stay at the head of my bed but everyone ended up staring at my crotch when DD made her appearance and I couldn't have cared less.

  • First tri once or twice then not till like 32 weeks? Then from it can be more regular.

  • After my initial vag ultrasound at 7 weeks last time, I don't think my "cooch" was on display again until 36 weeks when they did the strep b culture and a cervical check (and then it was weekly cervical checks)

  • @huskymomma94 why keep checking it so close to the EDD? Don't you worry about "disturbing the force"???

This.  Also, I only had four people outside of DH and I in the room at the time of birth.  Midwife, two nurses, and the pediatrician.  The pedi stayed out of the way until after LO arrived.  It really wasn't bad.

Lol. I liked knowing what was going on, even though I know it doesn't necessarily mean anything.  FWIW, I was only checked 3 times--36,37, and 38 week appts...I showed up for my 39 week appt in labor ;)

  • After my pap in the 1st tri I didn't have to spread my legs for the midwife until week 36 for the group b strep test. I had her check if anything was progressing. I declined cervical checks at all later appointments.

I showed up at the hospital and they checked me and I was at 10cm
I didn't care who saw my vag at that point.
  • Barring complications, you shouldn't have to even take your pants off until the GBS swab at 35/36wks, then the checks at the end.

  • Not often, IME. I had transvag u/s twice with DD1 and a pap smear all in first tri, then Group B strep swab at 36 weeks and cervical checks at 37 and 38 weeks to determine plan of attack for my 39 week induction. Pretty much the same with DD2, minus the transvag u/s.

Seriously, though, if you're not over the shyness by the time you birth the kid you will be pretty quick after. I had a pap today and when I sat back up on the table the whole paper gown slipped off my lap. 5 years ago I would have been mortified. Today, I didn't care and my OB, who has birthed 3 of her own, and I had a laugh about how your dignity is just gone once you'd had a kid or two.

  • Once the transvaginal u/s stopped, I don't think I had any checks until I was around 36 weeks. But yes, it'll all be hanging out for everyone during labor. That's not the time for modesty!
