Genetic Testing Q

Anyone doing one of the new DNA tests instead of the NT scan / quad screen?

I assumed the DNA blood tests (MaterniT21, et al) were super expensive if not covered by insurance. My OB's lab is only charging $145. I think we are going to just go for that rather than the traditional NT scan + quad screen. The only thing the scan could tell us that the DNA test cannot is if there are placental placement issues. I will have multiple scans in 2nd and 3rd Tri bc of DD's complications so I we can check out the placenta then.

Re: Genetic Testing Q

  • If it were an option for me, I would. My ob says that the new blood tests only work for single babies

  • DW and I were just talking about what we will do, ultimately it will depend on if kaiser will cover the test. If not then we will just do the nt scan.
  • My doctor already put in a referral for whatever kind of doctor does amniocentesis, but at my next appointment I'm planning on asking if we can't do one of the new DNA tests instead.

  • I really wanted to get that done but my doctor refused since I don't qualify or the risks. I even said I would pay out of pocket (HSA) the $1,200 but she still said no.

I can't believe yours is only $145! Score!

  • @DemoDoll I am still shocked it was that cheap. I was also under the impression that it was over $1k! I might need to ask some more Qs...just in case.

  • My OB said it would be no more than $150 out of pocket as well for the Panorama test.  I still may see if my insurance will cover it since I'm AMA but when I asked them about it they said they would have to review my chart and make a decision.  When I asked what specifically they were looking for to qualify (certain risks, etc)- they wouldn't tell me, so I'm not holding high hopes for any coverage.

  • I'll be doing it and will have to pay out of pocket ($235). My sister lost a baby with trisomy 13 and because of that we will be doing it. My OB said I'm not at a higher risk, but after dealing with it first hand, we have decided that we want it done.
  • Yes! I hope to do it. I still need to check with my insurance, but I hope AMA will be my ticket.
