  If it is really black, you want to be careful doing any kind of stripping.  I would probably wash it A LOT and with crap shampoo and conditioner that is going to pull color out of it and do some sun.  Once it starts getting a little lighter from that I would use lemon juice and hang out in the sun.

  I'm sorry. Can you tell the stylist you're unhappy and have them fix it? I know that's uncomfortable, but it's probably going to give you the best, least damaging outcome.

  I believe they can strip it in less damaging way. I watch Tabatha Takes Over and she would say its also the stylist's responsibility to tell you what will look good as they have the training. Also, I think they should help fix it even it was your idea, but stylists may feel differently.

  I just asked my BFF who is a hair stylist.  She said about all they can do to totally lighten it is to strip it, but she says you'll hate life if you do that because your hair will be like straw.  She said go buy Pert shampoo and wash it a few times with it.  It might help fade it.  As far as the highlights I suggested, she said it may or may not work because it can be hard to lighten through freshly dark color.

  I've had that happen as well, it sucks. I agree with prell, or go to a Sally beauty supply, they have some shit there that will help to get rid of the color. Also call your salon and bitch them out, it will make you feel better.

  Thank you for posting this. Although I'm sorry you had to! I just got my hair colored and it looks nothing like I pictured it would. She did it for free so I'm not going to complain. Off to shampoo the crap out of my hair.

  You know, it really brings out my fucked up patchy eyebrows. As soon as I get my wallet from DH's truck, I'll go buy some pert or prell!

  I think your bangs look nice. When I had bangs a couple years ago, I thought they were way too short and immediately grew them out. Looking back at pictures now, they weren't nearly as short as I had perceived them.
  
  Although, take my opinion with a grain of salt. For a couple years after college I had black hair with eggplant highlights & loved it.

  @tinyhumantoe wash it with Dawn and baking soda and use a lot of conditioner. I would leave the conditioner on for ~15 minutes or so. Pert Plus shampoo should also fade it out pretty good.

  They could add highlights to lighten it, but they will have to use bleach to do it and that's going to damage it pretty bad. Also, stripping is going to make it pretty dry too. It will fade over the next few days... let us know!

  I agree that I think you look good. But, if you want it to fade, you can use clarifying shampoos.  Hot oil treatments always made my color come out faster.  Just wash it ASAP.

  The bangs will grow quickly. I got bangs cut two weeks ago, and they're already in my eyes. As for the color, I'd start by returning to your stylist and expressing your displeasure. Maybe she can help lighten it. Washing frequently will also help. And what if you add in some curl or something. Sometimes texture can help soften a stark color.

  I worked for hair salons for the better part of 10 years and can tell you that washing it a lot will help it fade, and that adding highlights in next week or so will really help too.  Yes, the bleach will damage your hair somewhat, but no more than stripping it with crap shampoo will.  I have colored and highlighed my hair for more years than I care to admit and have really healthy hair.  The other thing you could do would be a color correction which involved a lot of time, money, patience and no guarantee that it'll totally work. 

  I'd go the cheap shampoo/sit in the sun route.  Don't worry--it's just hair.  And at least you'll make an impression when you have to give your talk!

  OK, I think my issue with this color is that last time my brown had too much red in it, so I asked for far less warmth.  So it's stark black.
  
  The good news is that my salon uses very high quality color.  :-S
  
  I spent an hour in the hotter than hell shower doing 6 Prell and Pert washes.  It looked like a lot came out, but nope.  Stark black.
  
  So this morning I did 2 Dawn washes, a Pert, and a Prell.  Between that and last night, I created a hairball in the shower the size of a large kitten.  It's still blacker than ever.
  
  However my hair feels super soft and healthy, because last night and today I did a 10 minute conditioner soak with Loreal Keratin somethingorother.
  
  So, fingers crossed that it fades.  A coworker put a knife on my desk in case I decide to go emo cut myself LOLZ.

  I think it looks cute too, fwiw. I would also like to put out that if you give it a week or so, you might not be as upset with it. It takes me a bit to adjust to new colors or styles.
