Toddlers: 24 Months+

Is there such a thing as too much sleep?

DH worries about DS because when he's at home he still takes a long nap.  I am pretty sure it's fine since he's happy and alert when he's awake so he's not lethargic.  He will sleep 12-13 hours at night and take a 4-5 hour nap when he's at home.  When he's at daycare Monday-Friday he gets about 2 hours of nap which is standard in that room and is still usually a happy kid.
We are on a stay-cation this week, and for the last 4 days he has taken 4-5 hour naps each day. I'm thankful for some time to get things done around the house, but DH keeps asking me "is this normal?"  I don't have much reference for other toddlers, my sister's kids finished naps by 2 years old.
Did anybody else have a big sleeper around this age? (nearly 3 years old)

  • DS will sleep about 11 hours at night and usually 3 during his afternoon nap. Not quite as much as your little man is getting but still a good amount. I don't know that there is a "normal" when it comes to toddler sleep. I have known moms with toddlers that sleep 12 hours a night with no nap. Some only 8 at night but a monster nap.

If he's happy and has a good temperament than it sounds to me like that is his normal. His brain is just thinking really hard when he's awake so he needs lots of recharge time. Embrace it!

I probably wouldn't say a 4-5 hour nap on a regular basis for a 3-year-old is normal per se, but I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. :)  He probably just requires more sleep. It might be something to mention to the pediatrician, though, just to get his/her opinion.

Mine normally sleeps 11-12 hours at night and 2-2.5 hours during the day but every now and then he'll take a 3-hour nap.
  • 12-13 plus a 4-5hr nap? So, as much as 18hrs of total sleep a day for a kid pushing 3yrs sounds like something worth mentioning to the Pedi. It's possible there's something fairly benign like low-iron leading him to feel fatigued and sleep more, it's possible there's something else going on, or it could just be he needs a lot of sleep.

Has this always been the case or is this newer? How's his growth, fairly normal?

FWIW my LO is just 2yrs, but sleeps about 11hrs at night and 2-3 for nap. From what I've seen online, that's pretty average/normal for toddlers.

  • He's always taken naps on the longer end, but they usually were 2-3 hours with 10 hours sleep at night around the 2 year old mark.  So he is likely getting an extra 3-4 hours of sleep a day now.  I would say in the last 6 months he has been stretching the sleep in and nap times on the weekend and now that we have a week off at home, I'm noticing these mega naps every day, not just Saturday and Sunday.  According to the internet he is average height, and weight I would say he is average too, maybe slightly above but he is a very muscular kid, not chubby.  He is hitting all the milestones I have expected and then some.
His pediatrician and her nurse are really good on the phone, I will run this by them this week.
