Am I unreasonable?

When I get up now in the mornings I am SO hungry that I *have* to eat immediately. Bf and kids LOVE that I must eat, because I cook eggs and toast, or make slow cook oats with fruit, or fruit wraps, etc. I feel like at this point, I'm not willing to cook for four other people BEFORE I eat my breakfast. I'm going to declare to my family that I will be making breakfast for myself, and eating it before I consider feeding the rest of them. We have cereal, we have toast, instant oats, granola, yogurt, fruit. The kids are old enough to make their own eggs. I feel like this is harsh, but I'm tired of being disgruntled in the kitchen while simultaneously nauseated because I'm cooking for 30-45 minutes for others until I can eat. Am I out of line here? As a refresher, my children are 8, 11, and 14.

Re: Am I unreasonable?

  • Not at all, IMHO. Your kids are old enough to fix their own breakfast. You can get it started for them and when yours is done they can take over while you eat it. Do they know you're pregnant? I don't think you're asking for special treatment here.. If you were demanding your 8 year old fix you breakfast I would have a different opinion.

  • LOL! They do know I'm pregnant. I just sat here, eating my breakfast, drinking my coffee, and it felt awesome. If people are going to be on their computers and in bed waiting for breakfast anymore, they are sadly mistaken. It would be different if people were helping in the kitchen, or even if bf made me breakfast sometimes, I'd be more willing to be uncomfortable and nauseated to make him food first, but not now. People can make their own breakfast, or wait for me to finish mine so I have some energy and feel well enough to do it. Thanks for your opinion, I just needed a little validation because it feels very foreign to me to do something for myself first.

  • If it is something you have to make for each person and can't be cooked all at once then I only cook for myself and my 1 year old
  • I used to love cooking and trying out new recipes before I got pregnant. but now I hate cooking, its like a murderous chore. :( I can't wait for the second trimester.
  • I am the same way. I just snack on fruit or yogurt while I'm preparing breakfast. It works for me.

  • I put crackers on my nightstand and eat them before getting out of bed.  That may buy your enough time to fill your stomach enough so that you can only cook breakfast once.  And FWIW,  8, 11, and 14 year olds should be able to make their own toast, cereal, yogurt/granola, cut fruit....maybe not eggs for the 8 year old, but certainly the 14-year -old could make them for everyone (including you!).

  • Not unreasonable at all. I know if I'm hungry and don't eat soon, I'll be hanging over the side of the toilet, dry-heaving. I wouldn't feel an ounce of sympathy while telling able-bodied people to fend for themselves first thing in the morning.

  • I don't think it's unreasonable.  A pregnant woman's gotta eat!  And your kids and bf are old enough to fend for themselves, if they can't wait the extra ten minutes.

  • Think of it this way. Your older kids are able to feed themselves. A baby is not. If the baby was newborn would you feed him/her first if he/she needed it? Don't feel bad about it :)
  • You ladies are all so dang awesome. Thank you.
