Shoes

I know this is completely a FTM question, but how do I know what size shoe to get LO and when should I have her start wearing shoes on a regular basis?

It seems silly to me to put shoes on a baby that can't walk but I also don't love the idea of her going barefoot at daycare either. Don't "they" say that it is best for babies to learn to walk barefoot first? I have looked for shoes for her on a couple of occasions but I never know what size to get and it seems like I am shoving her feet into shoes when try them on her.

Lastly, where are some good places to get cheap shoes? Everywhere I look they seam to be around $30 and that seems pretty expensive to me.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Shoes

  • Soooo.. we have to have shoes for Em when she moves to the next room - and I too want her to walk barefoot as much as possible - but after that I want her in good shoes for at least the next year.  So I will be taking her to stride right and getting fitted and buying at least one pair there - I will search consignment after that for used good condition shoes - but this isn't something I would cheap out on - just my opinon :)

  • I bought some Robeez on Zulily when they had them, I love that they are soft soled.  My DD walks and had no issue walking when I put those are her.  I just bought the 12-18 month ones.  They are a bit big but they are fine.

  • I would take her to Stride Rite to get fitted and check out Zulily to buy shoes. You can get some really good quality shoes at really good prices. They can be a little slow getting to you so be prepared to be patient if you've never ordered with them before.

  • The last time Zulily had Keen's I bought N a pair.  She loves them.  If you don't have a stride rite near you, go to Pediped's website and download their foot measurer.  That should help you figure out what size to get LO.

  • Thanks ladies! I hear great things about Stride Rites, so I will probably bite the bullet and get LO a pair of those once she starts walking. I think I may go and but a pair of Robeez to start with, so that she has something to wear to daycare especially when it starts getting cooler.

I just send her in socks right now and they are either off or filthy by the time I pick her up. She spends a lot of time with the 12-18 month olds and I think I would feel more comfortable if she were in shoes.

  • We went to Stride Rite for her first pair of "real" shoes and she measured a 3. She's just barely taking a few tentative steps here and there. When she starts really walking I will take her back to get measured again and get another couple pairs. Once she's walking steadily, daycare wants her in shoes all day there.

  • You can go to Payless and use their shoe sizer. I have no idea what kind of selection they have, but you can at least get her fitted pretty easily the next time you head to the mall.

  • Robeez are awesome for when they are learning to walk.  Also, look on eBay, most shoes this size are still in really good shape when sold used.  I've found Stride Rites & Robeez used for under $10 on eBay.

I like pediped originals and see kai run smaller for this age. Also Livie and Luca baby shoes. All soft sole. James wore soft sole while walking without any problems.

Join the pediped originals club for 50% off your first purchase.

I also buy a lot of our shoes from 6pm.com. They have all the name brands at low prices (Stride Rite, See Kai Run, Pediped, Livie and Luca...) and fast shipping. You can check most brands website for a printable size chart.

  • DD still only has soft shoes that I got at Target bc she's not walking. And yes, it's better for them to learn to walk barefoot, so I'm not getting her shoes until she takes her first independent steps. I'll also do Stride Rite for the first pair so she has good every day shoes and gets properly measured. But then I might order another pair online, through pediped or another site, if she needs more than one.

  • I had DD measured at Stride Rite last night. She measured a 3w. Being they were bogo 50% and DS needed new sneakers for school I bought her a pair of cute silver mary jane type of shoes. They were almost the same price as his sneakers. I was hoping to get one child that didn't have a wide foot oh well, lol

  • I had DD measured at Stride Rite and bought a pair of shoes for her off their clearance table. $15 and I think they're super cute.
