Only 12 weeks & sure of the gender??

This is my 1st baby and I am 12 weeks.. went for the nuchal translucency ultrasound and the tech said that she was 80% sure we are having a boy. She also mentioned that she normally won't say anything at all about he gender this early. She showed us his prominent little parts and sent us off with pictures.
My husband and I were so excited but wanted a 2nd opinion before telling family so we went to an ultrasound place and paid for a DVD and pictures, etc. Before the ultrasound, the woman said that she probably won't tell us eaither way about the gender because it is too early. When she looked at his little penis and balls she said, "Wow you are right! That's definitely a boy!" She said that she thinks I am a couple weeks farther along too.
Has anyone ever experienced or heard stories about the gender of a boy later being a girl?? I have only ever heard the opposite. I'm just so nervous to tell everyone and start buying boy things so early.
Thank you!

  • I would wait to tell anybody until the 20 week anatomy scan to be sure. At this point, yes, a "boy" guess could be a girl.

  • Yes, I have a friend that was told at 14 weeks that she was having a boy. They had a gender reveal party and started on the nursery. Then at the 20 wk u/s she found our she was in fact having a girl!! I would wait if I were you :)
  • I would think you're safe to tell family and friends but I would just make sure they know you found out very early and it could possibly end up being a girl. Your u/s tech wouldn't have told you unless she felt sure it was a boy. I'd definitely be more confident of the results at your 20 weeks ultrasound. However, it's not unheard of for people to be told they're having one sex and it ends up being the other.

  • Our ultrasound tech is very good at determining the sex but she always says that it's only a guess until the A/S at 20 weeks.  If you want to tell people, just say "we think we're having a boy".  Then you get to share the news but you're not 100% committing.  I wouldn't paint the nursery until after the 20 week scan.  Congrats on the "maybe" son! :)
