Have you bought anything yet?

This is #1 for DW and I. We saw a heartbeat and so we told her best friend who knew we were trying. Well this friend who I am extremely grateful for wants to give us a bunch of her stuff she was about to donate. I'm not going to complain but is it weird that I would like the first item our little receives to be something DW and I picked out for him/her ourselves?

Re: Have you bought anything yet?

  • Nope. We probably won't buy anything until after the anatomy scan.

  • Of course not! It's special. I would feel the same way
  • No not at all, but that is very nice that she is giving you so much stuff.
  • Not at all!!
Me and my bf have been trying for the last 3years and I had no idea I was pregers till I was 6weeks. I was so excited I told my sister who has had 2boys in 2years and she was telling me all the bits she can pass on to me. All I was thinking is I want to enjoy picking the first few things out.
I think because I have waited this long for all this to happen I feel I should enjoy every moment

No, this one is #2 and so we'll really just need clothes. Only a few if it's a girl.. so I'll probably wait until after the U/S. With my first though, we picked out things for her right away. My SIL also gave us lots of NEW baby things, and when we found out it was a girl we ran out and bought her first outfit. Turned out to be the one she came home in. We will do the same for this one with the going home outfit. :)

  • I think it is pretty sweet that your first baby stuff is a gift from a friend. Really sets the stage for a strong community support system for your little one!

  • I bought a big sister shirt for DD ajd we havr a tradition that DH purchases a super soft stuffed animal after we find out we aee pregnant.
  • I think it's nice that she's offering but I understand. Are you planning on having a shower? Maybe just politely say that your family is hoping to be able to buy you  some gifts for your first baby and suggest she donate them to someone who may be more in need?

  • Take the items! The only thing I remember was that we bought a teddy bear first.. otherthan that I have no idea what order we purchased things or were given anything else.
  • In my mind, a special first purchase by the excited new parents and a generous friend's hand-me-downs are two totally different things!

I bought a nursing tank yesterday and some clearances maternity shirts a week or two ago, but they are still sitting in a bag on my closet floor. We already have most of the big stuff, so we don't need much more. Some girl clothes if we have a daughter, and a few random things, but that's it.

With my son, I remember buying a onesie very early on... prob in the 6-8 week range if I had to guess. No shame in that!
  • Take the items, but that doesn't stop you from buying things. My MIL went out and bought enough boy clothes at yard sales to totally stock DS wardrobe for the first year. I used maybe 1/3 of them, some were stained, some smelled, and some just weren't my style. Not to sound uppity, but I like buying the majority new or getting hand-me-downs from people I know, not used out of some strangers house. I don't think baby clothes are really that expensive, unless you over indulge in the buying.

  • Absolutely not, but when the opportunity comes around to get free things for your LO, especially from a friend - whom I bet loved being able to give you all that gear - you should totally jump on it!

I would just make it a special point to go shopping and pick something out with DW when you are both ready. My DH and I made it a point to go shopping for a "take home" outfit immediately after finding out the sex of #1 (our DD). It was really special and we plan on doing it again with this kid.

  • Cute story about this actually, a very close coworker who i told i was preggers says she always correctly predicts the gender. She said she had a stong feeling with me but has not told me. She actually bought a gender specific outfit (like almost immediately) but wont give it to me until after i tell her what the gender actually is in a few months. I was so touched by her kind gesture and thought she was so sweet.
  • I do agree, hand me downs and purchase are separate things. =) Do what feels best for you! Haven't bought anything yet but I am ordering a onesie off ON that says little peanut because that's what we call "it" right now.

  • I caved and bought some long sleeve onesies at 6 weeks or so. I just could help it :)
  • We will definitely take the items, but DW is not understanding that I want to wait to get them until after her and I buy something together for the little. I'm probably just being crazy but I think the first thing that is for our child is something we pick out and not a hand me down :/
  • Take the goodies! If she was going to donate them anyway, pick through what you want and take the rest to Goodwill. You and DH can make an afternoon out of shopping for something sentimental for your LO - the going home outfit, his/her first stuffed animal or lovey, etc.

I bought a onesie and a new sleeper. And some new colored maternity jeans on sale because all the winter maternity clothes are gray, brown, or black.

  • I have bins upon bins of DSs clothes in case this LO is a boy. Alternatively, I have an embarrassing stash of little girl clothes... you know... just in case. ;)

I understand the sentiment, but hand-me-downs are SO nice. Maybe set up a time to get the items from your friend and go out this weekend with DW to pick out the FIRST?

  • In my opinion.. It's all just stuff. The first thing you buy your baby will still have a lot of meaning; doesn't matter when it came in the scheme of other things.
  • I would absolutely take the gift and not be at all concerned about what item you have first.  In my opinion, whatever item you first use for your LO is his/her first item.  I don't think it matters what you accumulate before baby is even here!  We already have our crib, and have had it since before we were TTC because my sister is finished having babies and asked if we might want it.  I'm not too concerned that my baby won't have his/her own crib.  He/she won't know the difference.

  • My cousin gave me two boxes of stuff before we were even TTC. I think you should take it and you can always buy the first new outfit/item and I think it will still be just as special.

  • I don't think that's silly at all. When do you plan in buying something?

  • We didn`t. We have lots of clothes from my aunt but not buying anything until baby`s here...maybe just the baby crib just before he/she arrives.
