Georgia Babies

What is reasonable to ask from a babysitter?

I live in Carrollton, GA and I have to work until 8:30 pm a couple of nights a week.
On those two days, a babysitter picks up my two kids (DD is 3, DS is 4 mo) from daycare and stays with them until I get home.
She feeds them and puts them to sleep, but I am wondering what is reasonable to ask a babysitter to do once the kids are sleeping.

The reason I have no clue is that I didn't grow up in the US. Where I grew up, people usually have live-in maids and they do everything in the house. I don't expect the babysitter to take care of all the chores, and my priority is for her to be with the children. But once they go to bed, what would be some reasonable things I could ask her to do around the house?

Thanks!

  • The only thing I would ask a sitter is that they clean up after dinner (put dishes in the dishwasher or wash them if you don't have one).  I really wouldn't ask/expect much more out of a sitter (except for maybe picking up any toys left out too).  If it was a nanny, probably some laundry thrown in there too, but those expectations would be set when they were hired in.

  • If you hired her on the expectation of just watching your children then I wouldn't think you should really ask her to do much. Like pp poster said clean up the dishes and maybe help the older child clean up toys. If you wanted someone to do housework it should have been advertised that way. Assuming you've already hired someone.

  • It is not unreasonable for you to find the house the way you left it or a bit cleaner so after dinner kitchen cleanup plus toy cleanup and not much else unfortunately.  Once the kids are in bed you can expect her to clean out your fridge by raiding it while she deplumps the cushions on your couch in front of the tv.
  • Thank you all for your replies. Unfortunately, I already hired her and didn't talk at all about any chores. However, I'm gonna ask her to wash and sterilize the baby's bottles, and put DD's dishes in the dishwasher.
On the plus side, I don't think she's eaten a single thing in my house.
