Chicken Pox...has anyone delt with them yet?

My son had the varicella vaccine at a year old but I am starting to think he has the chicken pox.

We went to the Dr yesterday with a 100.1 fever, diarrhea, and vomiting.  Today, he woke up with 3 red "bumps" on his face...they almost look like bug bites.

I didn't think anything of it until the bumps showed up today...and now added together with the other symptoms, it could very well be the chicken pox.

Has anyone had their child come down with them even after being vaccinated?

Thanks.

  • It's possible, but could also be coxsackie, which seems to be increasing in frequency in the past year. Call your pedi and discuss it. Hope your LO is better soon.

  • He had hand, foot, and mouth last December...this looks totally different.  Today he seems to feel better but is still running a low grade fever, just feels hot.

I also have a 3 month old, who seems to be feeling fine.

I will call the pedi on Monday to be sure.

I would definitely be calling monday.

FWIW, my little sister and I had them together. I was 13, never vaxed, and she was 3mo, so not vaxed yet. Neither one of us were in the "best" time for it. It was a long two weeks for my poor mom, but we were both fine.

  • My DD had them at 5 or 6 months. Obviously she wasn't vaccinated yet. She had a pretty mild case: low grade fever, maybe 50 pox. I would go back to the pedi to have him checked again. FYI...chickenpox has a 14 day incubation period, so you wouldn't see it in your 3 month old yet, unless they were exposed at the same time.

  • FWIW My lo and I got vaccinated together. Apparently I never got the vax. I managed to avoid catching it all these years.

  • Thanks for the replies....turns out it was another version of HFM, much milder than the 1st time he had it.  Apparently it had been going around daycare, so with the 2 week incubation period that makes sense.
