Two hour glucose test?

Anyone else get surprised with a script for a two-hour test instead of the standard one-hour test?

Is this something new?

Also, from what I see online it looks like the new acceptable score range has been tightened meaning more folks are failing!

Re: Two hour glucose test?

  • Huh, that is interesting.  I have only heard of the 1 and 3.  Did you have GD with your other child?  Maybe its new?

  • No, passed the first test with plenty of room to spare.

It catches more borderline people and keeps folks who barely fail the one-hour test from having to suffer through 3 hour test.

After more searching on Google it looks like this is the new test going forward, its what the Diabetes Society people recommend.  Sounds like one and three hour tests are being replaced by this one test.

  • Well good luck with it.  Do you have to stay at the DR.s office the whole time?
  • Doing it at LabCorp.  Yeah, you have to stay there and no food or fluids, including water, during the stay.

I guess this is the downside to living near big city, we get to be the guinea pigs for all these news tests.
  • The new ACOG guidelines are moving toward the 2 hour GTT only, instead of the 1 hour, then if you fail, the 3 hour.  You just get one test, and if you fail, that's it.  My OBGYN was implementing this with my first pregnancy, but I think they are still transitioning to the new guidelines.

  • I'm doing a 2 hour test next week. I was surprised too.

  • My previous office only did the 3 hour test. My current office does the 2 hour test. I've never done a one hour test and this is my third baby.

  • Are you in Canada? Tomorrow is my first test and its 2 hours. My doctor said they don't have 1 hour - it's 2 hours or 3 hours.

  • The first one I took was a 2 hr. I took it at my MFMs. I passed, but I'm still taking the 1hr. tomorrow at my OB.
  • I'm in Canada and the lab I work at we still do the 1 hour screen on moms first. And only do the 2 hour if the moms fail. We don't do a lot of 2 hour prenatals so there can't be a lot of women that fail. The one hour is nice because you don't have to fast before and then continue to fast after the drink until all the blood collections are done. Fasting isn't fun when you're pregnant so I think that's why they try to avoid doing it. But the 2 hour only wouldn't be wrong. Just a lot of work for the patient to go through that may not be necessary.

This. I read about it and asked my OB. He said it's not common practice yet, but headed in that direction.

  • I am having to do a two hour test. When I was pregnant with my girls 2.5 years ago I didn't have to do it.
  • Did the standard 1-hour test in 2009.

Guess this is what I'll be doing with my day off Tuesday, good times!

  • Yup, my hospital does this, and based on my results I would have failed the 1 hr and passed the 3hr, so I'm really glad they did.  I dont do much sugar in my diet, so I felt wonky all day long after drinking the orange nastiness.
