cloth diapers

I really really want to use cloth diapers (at least once baby is out of the newborn stage and we aren't constantly changing). People are sort of eye rolling at this. But my mom and grandma whole heartedly support it, even offering to buy everything. Luckily we won't be sending baby to day care for at least 6 months, maybe longer. I just can't bare the thought of all those diapers in landfills! ! Anyone else? what kind are you looking at (I do think I'll want an all-in-one)

Re: cloth diapers

  • We have CD since our DD was born; we also used them for the NB stage.  We mostly use pocket diapers, my personal favorites are BumGenius 4.0, Smartipants and Kawaii.

Don't let other people discourage you.  If it is something you are passionate about then you won't have an issue.  Good luck!

  • I love cloth diapers! We started from day 1, I thought it was great during the changing-all-the-time phase because at least I wasn't wasting all that money. There were lots of times I managed to use 3 prefold diapers in one change - so glad I wasn't throwing all that away! But plenty of people wait a few weeks to start.

The cloth diaper board has an FAQ at the top that should be helpful. We did mostly prefolds in the beginning, and then switched to pockets - Bumgenius 4.0. You do have to stuff them, but I kept having problems with all-in-ones leaking - I felt like I wasn't able to get them clean enough or the detergent built up or something.

  • I didn't even think to look for the cloth diaper board! Thanks
  • Agree with PP. Don't listen to the haters ;)

It's awesome that you have family that supports your decision. My family thought I was nuts for using CDs but now they think they're pretty awesome.

We used cloth from the beginning, too. For the newborn stage, we did prefolds with covers and now I mainly use pocket diapers and a brand called Best Bottom which are considered a hybrid diaper. The online diaper store Nickis Diapers has an awesome page that breaks down all the different types of diapers.

It's becoming more popular, too, so there are so many options CD users :)
  • Awesome! I say give it a go! I've been cloth diapering since my DD and love it. It's really pretty simple with all the new modern cloth out there.

  • I also CDed from day one. We used newborn sized prefolds and covers for the newborn phase, and after that a combination of hybrid and pockets. Now I've pretty much switched exclusively to Best Bottoms because its easier and seems to fit my LO better. My family and friends were all very much haters before DS was born. I got a lot of "Oh you'll last two weeks" comments. But they were wrong :-)

  • Don't listen to the haters! :)  I've cloth diapered both of my girls since they were born.  Even sent them to daycare with cloth with no issues.  For both my girls, I loved BumGenius and Fuzzibunz and prefolds with Thirsties covers from the beginning.  Once they got a little older, I added in flips, and thought they were great as well.
Well, we're on our way to 3 kids, 3 and under.
Set to welcome the craziness in April 2014!

We used and will use fitteds and covers for newborn and EBF stage - Kissaluvs - really contain the runny poo. I think we have 24 size 0s and 5-6 covers. We used/will use pockets when they're a bit bigger. I think we have a combination of size med fitteds and size small fuzzibunz pockets, and then a big stash of med fuzzibunz which we're still using at 2.5 and will probably last until fully PT'd.
ETA: it's not really much work to throw diapers in the wash. I don't know why people think it's such a big deal. With 24 newborn diapers I think I washed every 1.5 days (ie. morning one day, evening the next, morning two days later, etc.) to keep a good sized clean stash but I could've probably gotten away with washing closer to every 2 days. Because we're on number 2 and don't have a lot to buy, I might splurge and up my stash a bit.

  • We've CDed DS since we got home from the hospital. For the newborn phase we did prefolds and fitteds with covers and once he was big enough, we switched to pockets. I like pockets better than AIOs because you can adjust the absorbancy in pockets and the dry quicker (we put the inserts in the dry but air dry the pocket outsides so the PUL material will last longer. I have a lot of different brands because I like different ones better for different things (overnight vs. trim vs. car trips etc.). I also prefer snaps to velcro because DS can't undo the snaps himself and the velcro is starting to crap out now after 2 years of use so I don't think they will last for baby #2 (I hear it's possible to replace velcro, but I doubt I'll mess with it).

If money isn't an issue, you may want to look into Tots Bots. I love the 2 we have. They are pockets but the insert is attached to the outside of the diaper so they unstuff themselves in the wash. They are also this bamboo material on the inside that is super lovely.

Also, I love Country Save detergent and I add white vinegar to my wash to make them super fresh. CDing really is awesome.

  • I will add, don't ask a daycare on the phone if they will CD. Take in a diaper (pocket or AIO on whatever and a wetbag) so they can see it in person before the knee-jerk "no" reaction. We use cloth wipes at home but send disposable wipes to daycare because I want to make it as "normal" a process for them as possible.

  • Same as the others.  Prefolds and covers for the early days and then BumGenius 4.0 snaps for everything after.  This will be baby number 3 for my diapers and they still look great!
  • We must have been really lucky with DSs old day care. I asked the owner on our tour, kind of sheepishly, if they'd let me bring in cloth diapers. Her immediate reaction: "I love cloth diapers!" I've also heard of a lot of day cares that becoming more and more accommodating.
  • Oh yes, snaps all the way here. I like covers with Velcro in the beginning, but snaps one he hit the pocket stage. He now knows/understands undoing Velcro, so that's just asking for trouble, lol.

    Snaps are da bomb.

We did cloth diapers with our first and I loved it. Yeah, it was more laundry, but it's either more laundry or more trash, and we have to take our own trash to the dump, anyway. It's not like laundry is this intense hands on time commitment, either. We started as soon as the meconium cleared. We had some xs diapers and also pre folds (I would've gotten preemie prefolds in retrospect) and it was nbd. You're going to be changing those diapers anyway, and you can fit like a million newborn diapers in a load, so it's not like changing more is going to make you do more laundry. I want some of the work horse fitteds from green mountain diaper co for the newborn stage this time, although I will still have 5-6 xs bum genius, too. My day care also used cloth diapers with no problems. They did put them on too loose sometimes and that made them more prone to leaking, but whatever.

  • It's even easier in the newborn stage because the runny poops just wash away, no need to scrape and scrub. I used prefolds and covers up to 6 months and saved sooo much money, though we used disposables at night. When my daughter started solids her movements were peanut butter consistency and I gave up because of all the cleaning involved, but I've always wished I had gone back.

  • I also plan to CD! I was CD'd myself as a baby, I have weird/crazy allergies and I can't have certain things touch my skin.

I was looking into the gDiapers, but with all these suggestions, I'm going to keep looking!

  • The people who are eye-rolling probably have no idea what it entails. It's really so much easier than people make it out to be. And it's SUPER easy in the newborn phase, because you don't have to dispose of the poop - it's all water soluble so it all goes straight in the wash.

I've mostly used Thirsties fitteds & covers. The fitted/cover combo is virtually leak-proof, because you have two sets of elastic holding everything in. But now that DS is older and wiggly, it's more annoying to have two pieces to put on. For AIOs I like BG Freetimes and Blueberry brand. I would really suggest a diaper trial, or buy a few different kinds used and see what you prefer.

  • Thanks for all the info ladies! I'm feeling a lot more confident about this now!

We've used disposable liners (Bummis, from Amazon) since DS started solids because of this. I love my little veggie eater, but it makes his poops loose and horrible even now. I'm so happy to be able to flush them away. Our house smells like poop otherwise when he's been on antibiotics and we've had to use disposables.

  • I've cloth diapered with my last three kids and love it. We use BG 4.0's and Kawaii's. There are a lot of great online stores and deals. I like Nicki's Diapers, Kelly's Closet and Jillian's drawers. I think it's awesome your mom and grandma are being supportive!

  • DD was 6 lbs when she was born, so we used disposables until she fit in the prefolds we had.
Pocket diapers are my favouritee, except for newborns when prefolds with covers are the way to go. Kawaii is my favourite brand. One size kind of suck for younger babies... ridiculously bulky. My mom gave us a prefold diaper service for the first months and it was amazing!

  • I started CD with DS at 4 or 5 months and from birth with DD. I would totally recommend starting from birth, especially if you're considering it for environmental reasons. Don't let anyone discourage you, it's much easier than you think.

CDing during the newborn phase can be pricey but they have great resale value if kept in nice condition. I loved Kissaluvs size 0 and Lil Joeys. I tried prefolds and covers but hated it. I've heard a lot of people loved them though. We used Thirsties duo covers for the fitteds (the KL0s) and when we did use PFs.

For OS diapers I've used Kawaii but I prefer Bumgenius pockets and Thirsties all in ones. I actually really love Twinkie Tush fitteds but they are costly and probably not ideal for people CDing for budgeting purposes.

  • Not sure if we are gonna do CD or not but my cousins wife makes her own baby wipes, which you can also do as cloth or disposable using paper towels. Here is the formula for it if you are interested, I think I'll try it, sounds like fun!

  • We've been clothe diapering since about 7w. I absolutely love it. We use bum genius. I do use disposables when I'm out because my diaper bag became so huge I couldn't stand it. Otherwise I love them. Has saved us a ton of money; especially with #2 coming!
  • I just use wash cloths and warm water.

  • I use g diapers with my 12 month old and love them. You can get them at Target.
  • I love prefolds and covers. Fitteds are also nice, I like the GMD workhorses and Kissas. I really don't like pockets or AIOs that much, nor do I care for OS options.

If you don't mind going with used, you can usually score awesome finds on Spot's Corner at hyenacart. I've gotten fitteds and good wool covers for cheap there.

I didn't know they had g diapers at Target now. I've only seen Charlie Banana. So great to see CDs in stores :)
  • I CD at home and DD when I'm out.  I love love love my Fuzzibunz!  I also use Thirsties with flats or prefolds for the newborn stage, because I do find the Fuzzibunz to be a bit bulky on my six-pounders.

  • We will be CDing for sure. I prefer pockets and we will probably do Blueberry minis or newborn simplex for the first few months.

I think people who roll their eyes are either people to whom it's not important enough to make the effort, or people who don't want to believe that it's really nbd. Go for it! We're planning on CD too.
