Trying to Get Pregnant

GTKY: Hair edition

I've been thinking of cutting my Hair lately. I want something bold and beautiful and doesn't require a lot of maintence. I've always had super curly hair which right now sits in the middle of my back. When its straight (and I have the two hours it takes to do it) I can pretty much sit on it. I want to cut it and maybe add some color.Tell me about your hair. What's the craziest thing you've ever done to it? I'll go first:

My hair color is black and the first time I went to get highlights of brown, I let my friend who was in beauty school do it (first mistake). She said she had to bleach it because black hair can't be colored over easily like other hair colors. I reluctantly said okay (second mistake). She started bleaching the strands and wrapping everything in tin foil. Left me alone for about 5-6 mins to talk to her instructor. She then came running over to me and removed one piece of foil and literally screamed.  My hair was snow white! I FREAKED THE F-OUT! The instructor was like no big deal and said that they could now color it. Which I let them do (third mistake). I left feeling like crap. Weeks went by and the highlighted pieces just kept drying out. Two and a half years later everything finally grew out and I vowed to never trust a friend to do my hair again.

I also have thick, curly hair, but most times I wear it straight. I'm holding onto the fact that my 3 hour weekly sacrifice to straighten is worth it. I've done a few things to my hair that I regret. When I was 13, I got so fed up with it that I just chopped off about 12 inches worth of length... The day before yearbook picture day. It was so bad that my teacher was trying to help me even it out right before my picture was taken. I'm pretty sure I've burned almost every picture I've come across. When I was in my 20's I tried to dye my hair blond. Yeah, that was a disaster. I didn't apply the color evenly so I had blotchy color everywhere. I could wait to dye it back to a darker color.

  • My hair is currently a few inches below my shoulders. It's natuarlly wavy but I usually straighten it. It used to be really long but I tend to get sick of it in the summer (my hair is medium thickness and I have a ton of it) so I chopped it off last summer and I'm still growing it out.

The craziest thing I've probably ever done to my hair was get it cut in Italy by a woman who spoke no English so my friend and I kept trying to explain that I wanted layers. My hair was really long back then and I was going to school in Switzerland for the summer. It was the 90's and I wanted the short hair that Kelly had on 90210. She cut it short and gave me layers. It wasn't exactly what I wanted but it was close enough. ;-)

  • My hair is currently mid-back and a beautiful burgundy color. I've been dying my hair since I was 15, and I've experimented a lot. I think the craziest thing I ever did was let a (male) friend bleach it a few weeks after I'd dyed it black. When I was 18, having flaming bangs was pretty cool. It went from platinum blonde at the ends, to an orangey color, to bright red at the roots. I thought my Mom was going to kill me.
  • I had a rat tail one time. And then one time I dyed my hair blond on top and dark brown on the bottom. It was my skunk 'do.

Picture proof of my awesome MySpace hair. I think this was all 2005/2006. Ahhh, to be young again....

I cut my own hair. I do a better job than most hairdressers, so I can't see paying 50 bucks a pop for them to do what I can do myself.

I am one cheap ass bitch.

ETA: Two months after our wedding, I chopped all my hair off. Cut off 9 inches and went to an ear-length bob. Hubs wasn't too sure about it at first, but he's come around. I'll probably grow it back out, though. That's what I do.

  • @slappalicious I think the one thing I'm missing is a hair stylist I can trust and will do exactly what I want. When I've cut my hair in the past I had to fight my stylist every step of the way.

In regards to DH: My DH loves long hair as well. Yet he doesn't know the pain I go through to maintain it. So hopefully whatever I decide will grow on him. :-)

My hair and I are finally friends after many years of hating each other. It's pretty curly and I now know how to style it without it looking like a frizzy mess. It's dark brown and my beautician puts the best highlights in - I just let her have fun when I see her.  DH loves it.

I've done two crazy things (3 actually..)

    1. Chopped it to my ears in 7th grade. HUGE mistake. I have a fat face so I looked horrible, plus the lady who did it shaved my neck and I still have issues trying to grow it out long enough so I don't look like a hairy monster on my neck.

    2. Dyed it black in 10th grade. I'm so white I'm almost translucent so black hair made me look really sick. I can't believe my parents let me do it. While I had it black I was at a retreat and they brought in a "stylist" who gave me "highlights". Yea I left with black hair and bleach blond highlights.

  • One time I was a hair model for a girl in school. Bad idea. Needless to say I won't do that again. Now I get my hair done at the salon I work at. It's awesome :)

  • I am super boring. I've never dyed my hair--it is long, pin-straight, a nice red color and (the only bad thing) kind of thin/fine. I basically grow it long and then have it chopped to my collarbones with some face-framing layers. I probably only get my hair cut a couple times a year. I've donated to Locks of Love 3 times (with a fourth probably coming up soon). The longest hair I've donated has been 14 inches. I think I should find a more professional hairstyle, but it is jut so easy to keep my hair long--I don't even need to blow dry it, it is super straight, and, *cross fingers* no greys.

  • I have very coarse long super curly dark brown hair with kinda red highlights. I always say my hair feels like horse hair. I now get keratin treatments and its the best thing I've ever done. My hair is now long straight and silky smooth. I use to spend hours drying and straightening my hair. Now it literally takes 6 min (i timed it) to dry and I don't have to do much after that. Most of the time i don't even dry my hair anymore just let it air dry.

I've done so much crap to my hair. Let a friend highlight it once from a kit from walmart. My coarse hair soaked it up and I looked like a skunk.

I once colored it from a Walmart color yet again and my hair turned orange so I colored it again didn't fix it then I colored it again. Still orange. 2 weeks later got a professional to fix it.

My favorite was trying to cut my own hair once, the back of all places. Well I didn't cut it straight. It was long and i had to get it chopped off but my hair is so curly I looked like I had an Afro. So I went to Walmart yet again but this time bought a relaxer that blacks put in their hair to straighten it. It worked but my hair got an orange tint yet again!

It only took me 37 years to figure out NEVER go to Walmart (or anywhere) to buy boxed anything to put on my hair. I only trust professionals now. I have the weirdest hair. It pulls reddish orange and when she highlights it one side is always considerably lighter so she has to do all my hair different.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • I'm really in love with my hair, so I rarely do anything to change it.  It's shiny, dark brown, completely straight, and always smooth despite the SC humidity.  I recognize that by keeping it to the middle of my back, it's something of a security blanket, but it's a really pretty one!

Freshman year of college, I went to a new stylist who misunderstood that I wanted long layers and chopped it off to the base of my neck.  I cried.  A LOT.  Senior year of college, my BFF and I gave each other a set of spa/salon treatments at graduation gifts.  For our day at the salon, we both decided to get subtle highlights.  When I decided on mine, she said, "OMG, you'll barely be able to see those highlights!  Grow a pair girl!"  And so we one-upped each other into bright blonde highlights.  We have really dark hair.  I thought my mom was going to kill me when she saw the highlights peeking out from my cap on graduation day.

Since then, I don't color my hair.  And since Freshmen year, I don't cut my hair above my shoulders.  It took years to get back to being healthy at a long length.  I go for a trim, deep conditioning and shine treatment every 6 weeks.

  • I am usually very boring with my hair, just because I'm afraid if I try a crazy style that it won't look good and I'll hate it until it grows out. I have very long, thick, curly hair. Right now is the longest it has been since I was very young, it goes about an inch past my bra strap in the back. Feeling very hippy but loving it, even though it's a pain in the ass to wash it and keep it looking tame.

The craziest thing I ever did was when I was a Junior in high school. I bought one of those color and highlight combo boxes and made the mistake of having my 13 year old sister color my hair. The actual color wasn't too bad, but the highlights ended up in big random blobs and streaks all over, and was orange. I wore my hair in a ponytail the next day at school and ran to my hair stylist that evening begging him to help me. He said the only thing I could do was buy the darkest color possible to cover it up, so for a couple months after I had jet black hair. It was a lovely time! I tried going practically black about a year ago and it looked much better this time around, then again I look a lot different than I did in HS (and I had a professional do it  ;))
  • My hair is baby fine and stick to my head straight. Right now it's a bit below my shoulders and I don't know whether I'm going to cut a few inches off or grow it out. It can look so limp grown out, but I really want Princess Kate hair. It's naturally light brown/dishwater blonde (I think...) I've been dying it since I was 15 and red is basically my home color. I once tried to bleach it and there's so much red pigment in my hair it won't all come out, so there was an unfortunate orange incident. Followed by an unfortunate purple incident when I tried to dye it dark brown. I've bitten the bullet in the past year and gotten a colorist and I'm glad I did. I'm a medium coppery red now with a few golden highlights that blend in nicely (I hate when I can see color deliniation), like Christina Hendricks but a little more red and without a rack that fabulous. The one thing for me is that my hair has to be wash and go because I rarely heat style or blow dry or use product. That's a lazy thing. I love doing buns because they make ig look like I have more hair. I also cannot stand hair on my face or neck for long periods.

  • I  like to have fun with my hair. I figure, it's the one thing that I can significantly alter and it's not permanent. My hair is currently long (about mid-back) and highlighted blonde. I have had my hair super short, long, curly, straight, dark brown, red, blonde, and everything in between.  When I was younger I had a few light pink extensions put in, and recently, I added a few dark pink ones to the under layers of my hair. Because I am so experimental, I have definitely had a few mishaps, but nothing that couldn't  grow out or be corrected. :)

  • I chopped my hair into a pixie in November...it was super cute.  But, I'm ready for my long hair to grow back....this is the longest process EVER!!!!!!!!!!

Yes! I'm in this phase too... I constantly look like I have a mullet. I love it pixie short, but DH has never seen me with long hair so I'm going to grow it out one more time.

The craziest thing I ever did was shave my head.
  • I've done it all, color wise. Magenta, purple, blue, turquoise, cotton candy pink, fire engine red, two-tone, blue black, platinum, brown, maroon...all of it. Blond is my shit though. Every time I deviate, I always come crawling back!

But other than being shiny & a pretty (fake) color, my hair sucks. It's so thin & fine it looks like 1st grader hair. It actually looks a lot like Piper's hair in Orange is the New Black. I just kind of keep it shoulderish length and slightly layered and accept that it's not good hair. Sometimes I do bangs but bad bangs can ruin your day, every day that you have them...and it's SO hard to find a stylist who does good bangs.

Craziest thing I did was decide to dye it blue black with a box of L'Oreal Feria. Over bleached blond. It was Bic pen blue for a few days and then it faded into a brownish green, like a baby turd. After a few months, I finally convinced my mom to let me get it fixed. It was really expensive and took about 7 hours.

Sort of a timely post for me... I've got a hair cut scheduled later this week.

I've got lots of dark strawberry blonde, fine, wavy/curly hair that likes to frizz. It's really long because it grows really fast and it's totally my security blanket. But I'm contemplating cutting it and donating to Locks of Love. (I've donated before)

The craziest thing I've done with it was dyed the last 2 inches purple. I was in high school and had a chin-length bob.
  • Back when I was a smoker, I tried to light a cigarette and lit my hair on fire.  Half my bangs, all the way up to my hairline.  To cover up the disaster, my stylist cut my bangs at a sharp angle so the short end hit about the hairline, and the long end covered my eyebrow.  Then to balance it, he cut the back at a sharp angle, too, so it went from my ear on one side and reached my shoulder on the other side.  I refer to is as my zig-zag hair cut.

It was the best hair cut I have ever had.

I've never done anything too crazy to my hair...yet. Lol I've had long for for most of my life. I'm too chicken to go short. Plus, I think long hair in my opinion is more low maintenance. I usually don't do anything with my hair in the morning except brush it. Some days I forget to brush them bc I'm in a rush and would end up brushing them out with my fingers. . I get up way too early already as is (5:45 am) to want to style it or make it look cute. So recently I colored my hair ombre style. I haven't colored in several years and wanted something again... low maintenance. With ombre, I don't have to worry about getting the roots redone. The top 3-4 inches are my natural color to start with.
