Health and Wellness Check In

Posted by the person with the busted foot, of course.

Who's healthy this week?  (Not me).  How have you been successful?  Or not?

QOTW: You have the magical power to turn one junk/unhealthy food into a healthy "superfood" (a la kale).  What'll it be?

Went to the orthopedist yesterday and got a walking boot, which gives me a lot more stability/protection than the soft case/post-op shoe I had before.  I can't actually walk with it yet, but I can put it on the ground for balance, and it will help me transition to walking in a couple of weeks.  I have a follow-up in two weeks at which point we will talk about that.  He said it would probably take 6-8 weeks to heal completely, but I won't be totally out of commission that whole time.  The other nice thing is that I can take it on and off as I wish, so I can wash my foot, shower without a bag on it, scratch itches, etc.  Hallelujah.

When I took the soft cast off my foot was DISGUSTING.  The whole foot, from my ankle to my toes, is grayish purple and puffy.  Ugh.  There's even a bruise on the bottom of my foot in the area I broke.

Good news is I can keep doing PT for my hip as long as we modify the routine to avoid bearing weight on my left foot, and I'm hoping that will help me not screw something else up via crutching/hopping/compensating for the injury.

Exercise is off the table, which is frustrating, but does motivate me to eat better.  My wife has been great about facilitating that, since she's doing all the cooking and shopping.  But I totally splurged on a big rich meal last night.  Oh well.  It's a new day.

QOTW: Brownie sundaes!  I guess that's more than one food.  Brownies?  Or ice cream?  I really love ice cream and tell myself it's good for me because of all the calcium. :)

I also have not been healthy the last few days. Surprise!

I am honestly struggling to get back into a healthy eating routine and stick with it. That's all I'm going to say about it.

@ball.and.chain - glad you got that walking boot! Good luck getting to and fro at work today!

QOTW: It is really hard to pick just one thing! Ice cream and brownies are both really good choices! I think I have to go with pizza though. Yum!

Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh I've been terrible lately :( My eating went WAY off track with all the stress from my IUI debacle and work picking up again.  I'm still getting over that stupid cold with snot balls galore when I exert even the tiniest bit of physical effort.  I'm hoping to get back to my exercise and eating well soon.  I have this massive bug bite on the back of my leg - minor, I know, but it's like the size of a golf ball and it makes even sitting here uncomfortable.  Blargh.  I can't wait for my lungs to clear themsleves out so I can hop on my treadmill again.  I hope life gets back to normal soon.

QOTD: I'd turn cheese into a super food.  Cheese is already my food of choice when I'm hungry.  I just love cheese!  Cheddar, blue (currently off-limits until I know I'm not pg - gar!), brie, goat, mozarella, parmesan, colby, queso quesadilla, swiss, farmer's cheese... SO GOOD!

I did really excellent pre-IUI, but afterwards we have been doing not so hot. We seem to have gotten it back under control now, and are back to healthy meals at home, 100 ounces if water per day and as many fruits and veggies as possible.
I am still caffeine free which is feeling good. Exersize has been hard this week due to the 100% humidity. I tried to go running this morning and only add it 1 mile (my short runs are usually four.). Hopefully it cools down soon. Bring on the fall!
QOTD: pizza. Easy. I am a pizza fanatic. Last night we tried making pizza with zucchini instead I crust. While delicious, it just wasn't the same...

Yesterday I went for a 75 minute walk with the dog that involved a big, long uphill and I feel really good about that. I'd like to try to incorporate that into my regular routine at least 4 days a week.

I also made a huge salad last night that M and I had as a major component of dinner last night and will again for lunch and dinner today. I also finally went grocery shopping which makes it easier to eat decently well.

Last week M and I tested the waters to see if folks were interested in dietbet. @lbugher and @ball.and.chain both expressed interest, but I'm not sure if folks feel like 4 folks is worthwhile (also B&C broke her foot and lbugher is still sick). What do you all think? I can just sign up on my own with someone else's dietbet if we aren't feeling it as a group.

QOTW: when I read the question, I thought for sure the answer would be Cheetos or sour cream and onion chips. But then I saw ice cream, pizza, and cheese as people's answers and thought those would all be great choices. I think I'm going to say cheese. That would make pizza much healthier and would also allow me to add health by adding cheese to so many things!

@ball.and.chain Are you in a walking cast or an AirCast? I had an AirCast this summer for a sprain and it was great for support as well as taking the pressure off the foot. It was expensive though, I was grateful I had insurance to cover it.     That said - I've had a walking cast before too and it was fine, but because I walked around on it so much I ended up having to have it replaced twice before my 8 weeks were up because it was breaking down and disgusting.

I haven't really been on the "healthy living" train lately, mostly because I don't have the brain power/energy to do it and also because I've been struggling with ankle & wrist issues lately which really drain my energy.   That said -- I am trying hard to get back into the habit of eating lunch, and eating the lunch H packs for me - as well as drinking enough water through the day.    I think it's helping.

QOTW:  I think I would second cheese, because it's absolutely delicious.  My second choice would be probably the good old, white flour -- mostly because I love all forms of breads, pastries and baked things....
