X rays

I had dental x rays done before finding out I was pregnant and now I'm freaking out! I ovulated on August 1st and went to the dentist on the 7th didn't get my BFP until the following week. Should I be worried?

Re: X rays

  • I got a mammogram right before I found out I was pregnant, I of course panicked and called the doctor, she told me that since it is concentrated in one specific area it should not affect the baby.  She also said that I would have to have a whole bunch to affect anything, she didn't sound nervous at all, and I trust her.

However, I would call the doctor just to set your mind at ease.

  • i had dental xrays the day before i found out i was pregnant with my son.  i wore the lead apron (i assume you did too??) and they had said that even if i was pregnant (since i didn't know at the time, but had mentioned that we were trying and i possibly could be...) the levels of radiation would be so so miniscule for a few bitewings that i wouldn't be in any danger whatsoever.  technically they said the radiation levels are safe to do on big pregnant women too, but they always decline to do so out of precaution, of course.
  • I was several months (I forget exactly) pregnant with my daughter, and made the dentist aware. They did the lead apron and said I'd be fine. She's 6.5yo now and has been healthy since day 1!
  • Dental x-rays is a localize x-ray. It only exposes and shoots radiation to the area pointed to. If it was a regular X-ray using a Gendex machine it's only .160 if the office is more updated using the digital system it's even less radiation used .8 or sometimes .10 depending on weight if done by a certified assistant. Your also protected by the lead apron. I was around X-rays since I was 16 and have 2 healthy kids. I took X-rays on patients throughout my 1st pregnancy and she 16. There's no harm to you are your baby. And if in an emergency during your pregnancy if you need it they can still X-ray you with our harm to your baby, just ask to be double shielded.
  • I had a really bad back issue around 14 weeks with DS and needed to get it X-rayed. My Doctor said the amount of radiation is so small, that it would be fine as long as I wore the lead apron. They were x-raying my upper back as well, so it wasn't anywhere near my stomach. I would avoid X-rays if possible, but DS is totally fine.
  • Thanks for putting my mind at ease. I love this board.
