Flying advice

Any advice on flying in the first trimester? Also what are thoughts on those full body scanners airports are using now? Safe or ask for a pat down?

Re: Flying advice

  • Good question! I have a trip planned in October close to 12 weeks...

  • Flying in the first trimester is a breeze. You may feel queasy, but otherwise it should be fine and is totally safe. You can opt out of the full body scanners and they will do a pat down instead. Although, they are supposedly safe for pregnancy.

  • We are flying Friday and I started thinking about it tonight as I stated to pack...
  • No advice, but I'm flying around thanksgiving. I usually take a Dramamine, but I'll have to check with doc on that and the scanner issue. So many things to think about now!

  • I just asked the doctor about this as I'm traveling this week. She said the full body scanners are safe (I double-checked at the airport too just to be sure). She said the biggest risk at this point in pregnancy is blood clots, so make sure you wiggle your legs and/or get up to walk every 2 hours. The walking was easy because my bladder needed the break!  Definitely check with your doctor if you have any more concerns though. I hope you are both traveling somewhere fun!

  • Get an aisle seat! I had to get up to pee a lot - even in first tri

  • Aisle seat! And drink lots of water and get up and move every 2 hours. Later I pregnancy you should wear compression stockings on long flights but at this stage there's not much to worry about. It's when you're flying with a baby that things get complicated, lol!!

  • Eat as much as you can before the flight. I didn't and was miserable. I liked the window seat so I could curl up against it when I felt sick.
  • No way I'm going through the big scanner while pregnant. Call me crazy :). I flew last weekend and just requested a pat down instead. Took 5 minutes, no big deal!

  • We're flying this weekend.  The midwife said that there wasn't any issue, though if I can help it, sit farther from the window to avoid extra radiation.  I also think I'd rather go through the scanner than have someone pat me down.  Sorry, but only my husband's hands should be all over me! >:)

  • I did about 2 weeks ago didn't think about it but since I had bleeding issue I canceled my trip Monday for LA with my hubby. And since I've had no bleeding and I'm stuck in NY whiles he's in LA, Not happy about that. If I call and I hear any fun in the back ground I give him a MAJOR guilt trip. :(( but I guess if no medical issue traveling the remainder of the 1st trimester is fine.
  • So glad you asked this question.  I will be flying in late October and was curious about other's experiences.  I feel much better now although I'm concerned about the blood clots.  Before being pregnant, my feet would almost always swell on flights.  I'll have to be extra diligent about low sodium, plenty of water, and walking around.

  • If you're having nausea, bring ginger chews or something similar. If you're peeing a lot, get an aisle seat. Personally I always request the pat-down rather than the scanner - it's supposed to be safe, but it hasn't been in use all that long. That's all I can think of - first tri is no big deal for flying!

  • We are flying on Thursday and I will be requesting the pat down instead. It's supposedly safe, but I just feel better with the pat down and don't mind doing it. I'm much more worried about occupying my 11 month old on a 4 hour flight. Thank goodness DH will be with us.
