Babies: 3 - 6 Months

pet allergies?

My almost 5 month old has had a sniffley, runny nose on and off for a couple of weeks now. She also had what I assumed was a cold about a month ago. I don't want to jump to any conclusions but I am a little worried about pet allergies since we have a dog and two cats in the house. I'm trying to get educated just in case but Dr. Google is giving me mixed messages. Anyone here have experience with babies and pet allergies? Can babies develop pet allergies this young? Is there a way to deal without having to find new homes for the animals? I don't know how we would find places for two adult cats if it came to that. Thanks for any info, hopefully I'm worrying over nothing.

Re: pet allergies?

  • No advice really, but I worry about that too. My fur babies mean so much to me that I would be so upset. Hopefully its just a stubborn cold, but if lo has had symptoms that long it's probably time to see the pedi.

I asked our doctor about this because we have the same thing going on and she said they can't have allergies this young. I'm not sure I really believe that because it seems to be directly related, but I guess we'll see.

Your dr is correct. Their immune systems are not developed yet, so there is nothing to repel if it doesn't exist.

  • I'm thinking too ypung for pet allergies, and the exposure is probably going to keep them from having pet allergies, as opposed to if you had a pet free house, then suddenly introduced an animal.

My girls have had a very stubborn, bad cold for a couple weeks too.  Not to meniton teething causes runny noses as well.  For pet allergies, I'd look for a lot of sneezing and rubbing eyes a lot.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • Ive heard as well the too young thing, but for me it was not true. At 4 mos my LO had a bad cold that lingered for 3 weeks. It got so bad she couldnt sleep at night because she couldnt breathe. Then she started breaking out in eczema patches. Her pedi confirmed it WAS allergies. We had two large dogs that shed insanely. After we spent a few nights in a pet free home the "cold" went away and the eczema looked a little better. Then when she returned into the pet environment it came back and she was so congested she couldn't breathe. So, the pets had to go. It hurt my heart but my baby's health comes first. I hope your situation may be different but don't discount the fact that it could be a pet allergy. Maybe you could try staying at grandma's house for a weekend to see if it makes an improvement?

  • My son was diagnosed with a cat allergy at just over a year, although he had been showing signs for a while. He always had a runny nose and was having repeat ear infections and weezing episodes. We made an appointment with an allergist when he started getting hives. We initially thought it was a food allergy since the hives usually started just after we gave him his solids. When the allergy tests came back negative for all of the common food allergy culprits but positive for cats, we realized that our cats' food bowl was next to his high chair.

We did wind up re-homing our cats. We felt terrible about it, but we felt worse that he was looking at needing tubes and was needing daily nebulizer treatments. He still needed the tubes and nebulizer treatments after the cats were re-homed, but his symptoms improved substantially, and he never got hives again. I'm not sure what we would have done if hadn't found a great home for the cats. All I can say is I'm sorry you may have to go through what we went through, and I hope everything works out for you!
