Negating nutrition

**I'm open for all comments, and I appreciate all constructive criticism**

I don't like sweets. I never have liked sweets. Chocolate is one of my least favorite foods, and I hate ice cream... until now.

My husband has a serious sweet tooth - he consumes ice cream, pudding, cake, cookies, and candy like they are the 5 major food groups (and of course he never gains an ounce). I'm the one who eats salads and protein, and I always skip dessert, and I'm overweight. Well, the past week has been a whole new ball game. I want sweets all the time. All. The. Time. For breakfast this morning I had 2 toaster strudels, chocolate milk, and vanilla pudding. I felt guilty, so for lunch I had a cucumber sandwich on oatmeal bread, cherry tomatoes, and a nectarine. Within half an hour of lunch, I was desperate for sugar so I inhaled Twix and $2.00 worth of penny candy, and then I bought another $7.70 in penny candy for later (which I intend to share with my husband, but we'll see).

While my husband is ecstatic, and proudly saying, "That's definitely my kid", I'm very worried about my sugar consumption. I'm trying so hard to stay on track, but when I'm nauseated and candy is the only solution, I give in. Even though I am eating all "the right" things, I am concerned that I'm eating more of "the wrong"  things. Because my weight could become more of a health issue as my pregnancy progresses, our doctor has agreed with me that I should be seeing a nutritionist during 2nd and 3rd trimester, but I'm nervous that I'll gain a whole 25 lbs in the next 4 weeks.

Any suggestions?

Re: Negating nutrition

  • Candy really helps my nausea, too. For now I'm rolling with it. If it goes on for more than 2-3 weeks i'll get more concerned.

  • Maybe you can find a low calorie or sugar free candy you can suck on during the day but for meals stick to healthy as much as possible. Sometimes with my nausea I'll suck on a sucker for a while and it helps but it's not anything like eating doughnuts or something.  Yogurt is good as a dessert or with breakfast and greek has a lot of protein. Make sure you're getting enough protein in the morning to try and keep you going. It would be so tough to avoid something you're craving when your husband has it around! My husband is a much less healthy eater than I am and it makes it tough. Good luck!

  • Candy is my go-to as well and I am kind of letting it happen because nothing else sounds good.  Maybe just try to cut down portions?
  • Yesterday I was all about sugary drinks and candy, today is looking about the same. I'm overweight, and I felt like crap after eating all that junk, so I had my boss check my blood sugar, expecting it to be high. It was at 76. I am a believer in your body knows what it needs. Plus, this is first tri. Eat what you can for now, and worry about the rest later.
  • You should read "Do Chocolate Lover's Have Sweeter Babies?" by Jena Pincott.  It explains why the babe craves junk food.  I am not a scientist, so don't know if this is true, but she says something like: not all healthy food is healthy for baby (ie, fish, kale, brussel sprouts, califlower...) because it produces toxins the babe can't handle.  She claims this is the reason for morning sickness, to prevent you from eating those "healthy" foods and consume the junk.

  • You could try sipping on a soda instead... caffeine free Coke is my friend!

  • I would look for "healthier" alternatives. This us what I am doing ( and not perfectly but at least I try): craving ice cream = frozen yogurt with fresh fruits or frozen grapes (weird but strangely delicious). Chocolate cookies = almond cookies. Pie = milk with cereal etc. the trick for me is not having junk at home. Good luck!
  • @KatieGummow - that makes perfect sense!! In all of my previous pregnancies, I craved salmon, asparagus, and broccoli, which is why this need for sweets is so strange to me. I'll just trust my body. Thank you for calling my attention to this book! Our doctor did specify to me that she won't restrict anything during my 1st trimester - she said basically to eat whatever stays down.

  • Simple sugars are also easier to digest when you aren't feeling well. Can you try to get some of your sweets in the form of fruits? (As I type this I'm eating honey nut cheerios).

  • I am the exact same way! I never eat sweets. I just don't care much for them. I searched for an hour yesterday why this was happening because my coworkers mentioned it. They never saw me eat 2 brownies, piece of pie, and banana bread in 1 meeting. GROSS.  The common theme (and what made the most sense) was that you will crave sweets when there is a dip in your blood sugar.  Today I have made SURE to every 3 hours and fruit, yogurt, nuts to help it maintain. I haven't once touched my groceries from Saturday-2 kinds of ice cream sandwiches, twizzlers, butterscotch candies, superman ice cream, and cupcakes. Kind of a win!

  • I've been gaining so much weight & it's only my first trimester I feel so guilty, but it's all I want! Yesterday I cooked some steamed veggies with chicken to cut it out but my sweet tooth wanted ice cream and candy I replaced it with yogurt !
  • All I want is cereal! I used to eat meat and veggies for lunch and dinner every day. Now the thought of meat or veggies makes me nauseas. I made broccoli the other morning and spent about 10 min dry heaving at the smell if it. So for now I'm just going to eat what I can keep down or actually sounds halfway decent! Nice to hear I'm not the only one craving junk!
  • I'm basically only able to keep sweets and carbs down right now. If you're really worried, maybe you could replace some of your candy with sweet stuff that isn't quite so much empty calories. I for one can't get enough honey nut cheerios. I also keep eating this Kashi Autumn Harvest cereal - it's got a sweet maple syrup flavor, plus so much fiber. Win!

  • @snappyK - that cereal sounds delicious - great suggestion, thank you!!

  • I ate an entire box of cinnamon toast crunch over the past two days. Something about the cinnamon and sugar (especially in the leftover milk) just made me feel so much better.

Sometimes the only thing I'm able to keep down is some frozen yogurt or a milkshake. I wanted to scream with joy when my doctor told me (in front of DH) to not worry about eating healthy right now and just focus on getting something in my stomach!

    Good luck!!

  • I ate Pringles at 10 this morning and I too love cinnamon toast crunch! If I eat it and it stays down then it's a win!

  • I ate jelly for dinner last night! It was the only thing I could stomach eating without wanting to throw up. I definitely feel the 'eat to survive' method. I'm a little worried about what I'm eating too (noodles galore), so I'm planning on seeing a nutritionist soon. To combat sugar cravings, I've been trying to make homemade popsicles (no sugar, just fruit), and they've been pretty good. Good luck!
