Not Happy with Diaper Bag

So after a lot of searching, I ended up ordering the Petunia Picklebottom diaper bag from Pottery Barn Kids. It was pricey at almost $200.

Anyway, it arrived yesterday and I was really disappointed. It was pretty, but the openings in the bag were REALLY narrow... as in you could hardly open it wide enough to see into the deep bag. What the heck?! Total fail. And I didn't realize it, but PBK doesn't do free returns. (There's only 1 location in Manhattan and it's not close to where I live.) So annoyed right now. Back to the search...

I ended up putting this one on the registry and hope it's better. It's certainly cheaper and has plenty of positive reviews.

Re: Not Happy with Diaper Bag

  • I am a hoarder so unlike Hercules I always have had a diaper bag packed full.   I have a skip hop bag that I really like.  I am sorry to hear about the PPB bag.  My friend has one and it was great so it must be the style you picked.  Hopefully between the two bags one of them will work for you.

  • My son is three and I have used two Skip Hop bags.  They are very roomy and I love that they're not very expensive.  I don't want to worry about a diaper bag getting messy or dirty.

  • That sucks that you spent so much on a bag and wasn't worth it.

What friends o mine have done is just thrown their wallets in their diaper bags so they wouldn't have to carry a purse as well. And if you get a nice enough one just use it as a duffle bag after you no longer need to carry tons of stuff with you. I'm probably going to use my diaper bag and just a regular bag after. It doesn't look like a diaper bag

  • We used two different bags and were happy with them - first was a Skip Hop messenger bag and the other was more of a backpack design.

Hard to find a bag you really like without trying a few out
  • Why don't you just buy a reasonably priced bag that you can actually hold and try out in person. It will save you a lot of grief and honestly I'm finding it a little hard to sympathize with you.

  • Just an FYI: gilt.com has the versa for $35 but in bronze and graphite..

  • I got one of these for a great price on Zulilly: https://mommyonthegobag.com/
(One of my only baby purchases to date). It's cute and seems really functional - love the circular, detachable changing pad, too.

  • OP, have you ever looked at 31-gifts?  I have a bag from there for DS that I love. It's just grey, and I got his initials monogrammed in Orange on it.  It isn't a "diaper bag", but it is perfect for that purpose. I believe it is under $40 (so you can get more than one).

Mine is the "organizing utility tote". They also have a "super organizing tote" that is basically the same thing, but it zips closed.

  • I registered for a $60 one but if no one buys it for me im sure as heck not going to buy it.  I could fit 5 babies in the purse I carry on a daily basis.

  • Jeez that is expensive!   but you have good taste, in my opinion.
Thankfully my sister in law has 5 to give me - I'm pretty sure I will like at least one ;)

This exactly.  I have our last name monogrammed on the side.  I used it with #1 and will use it with #2 as well.  I haven't found anything else I like that could hold that many things so neatly.

  • It's funny all the different opinions here. :) Thanks for the feedback.
I live in Manhattan and we don't have a car. So I will definitely need something that zips closed and has lots of functionality. The problem with trying out different bags is that aside from Babies R Us (ugh... I cannot even stand to be in there for 5 mins), there are lots of boutique-type stores. I just don't feel like using an entire day venturing to 10 different locations all over the city to see the five diaper bags they might have in stock. It's time consuming and truth be told, the streets of NYC are not exactly even so I always feel like I'm going to break my ankle just walking around. So my personal preference is to shop online, but of course that method runs the risk of not liking it when you receive it. On another note, I feel like everything in Manhattan is so over priced. There were some other diaper bags that someone told me about - I looked them up and they're $400! WHAT?! Um, no thanks. And to boot, they were nylon! Nylon should never be priced that high! That's just crazy!!

Anyway, we're planning to get the Bugaboo Donkey so I'll have that little side-cart thing to throw my diaper bag in - or maybe not since I'll also have to use that for groceries and everything else... Unless I start using Fresh Direct and having those delivered too. But I imagine the diaper bag will likely become my own purse as well. So on that note, I suppose I'd like to have one that looks less diaper bag-ish and is a little more purse looking.

Meh, if i could justify a $200 diaper bag that looked awesome - i'd do it. To each her own!

  • PS - for the one I purchased from Pottery Barn Kids... I used gift cards, had a coupon, and got free shipping. So it actually only cost me $1.21. :)

  • Oh no! I am a FTM and worried about this too. I have no experience with diaper bags! But I will keep all these comments in mind- right now I have a Skip Hop Versa on the registry. I have been looking at reviews online, and that seems to be one of the best.
  • Yeah, I know they are really popular, so someone must like them, but I've never been a fan of the PPB boxy bag. We used a jujube BFF (also slightly expensive for a diaper bag!) but I love, love, love it. It is so well made, the pockets are great, it can be worn as a backpack (my fav) or not, and its washable. I've heard great things about the skip hop one your ordered to hopefully it works out!
