Pumping suggestions...?

I pump 3 times a day while at work and for whatever reason my left breast does really well with this routine but my right does not. I fed baby on the left breast this morning and have been dealing with engorgement and leaking out of the right side the rest of the day (I need to remember to start my day on the right!). I pump but I don't ever get much from the right side and can never drain it completely unless baby does it. I've tried hand expressing after pumping but it takes too long and I don't get a whole lot from it.

Anyone having these issuses besides me? Is there any way to make the pump more efficient on that side? The flange is the right size so I know it's not that... I'm definitely starting baby on the right side each morning from here on out!

Re: Pumping suggestions...?

  • I don't have any suggestions because I'm in the same boat except opposite sides. I had this same issue with DD1 and now again with DD2. I've read it's actually pretty common but if you find anything that works, please let me know.

  • My right side produces about 4-5x more milk than the left, so I do try to start the day feeding R on the right. Have you tried breast compressions while pumping? It helps me empty better on both sides. Also be sure that you are taking adequate time to pump... Sometimes I need to pump for about 30 minutes, especially for the first pump of the day when I am pretty full.
