Do you give food in the middle of the night?

DS (2.5) has started waking up around 3-5 AM asking for a glass of milk. He's not eating that great during the day, so he could feasibly be hungry, but I don't want to set up a terrible habit OR have him start waking for the day at that godforsaken hour. I would also he ate his calories during normal hours. He also doesn't nap, so the time it takes him to drink the milk and get settled back in is taking away from his total sleep in a big way. Would you keep giving milk?

  • Yes, but my kid is underweight. Assuming there's no underlying issues I would offer water and say he can have milk in the morning.

  • My DD3 is underweight too.  I wouldn't start that habit.
  • in my experience, waking through the night becomes habit quickly so i'd really push for more food or milk through the day. would he take water if you offer it? i just wonder if it's thirst or hunger, though it might not make much difference.
  • No. DD's pedi is a little concerned with how light DD is too, but I don't want to start a bad habit.

  • I think he's probably thirsty if he's asking for milk.  I would leave a cup of water by his bed and tell him he can drink that when he wakes up if he wants to, but I wouldn't give anything else.

Eh, the mornings my kid wakes up hungry she either takes milk at five and sleeps until 7-730 or she's up for the day at five. Lesser of two evils. It's never become a long term habit and she only wakes up when her body needs it but maybe ill eat my words later.

  • Also, he has a sippy of milk right before bed, so I'm not really worried that he's STARVING.

  • No, I wouldn't want to get in the habit of feeding them in the middle of the night.  I would try giving him some water and see if that helps.

  • I wouldn't.  Two out of my 3 are very picky.  It's not that rare for someone to not eat dinner.  They've never woken in the night.  They know if they don't eat dinner they're not getting anything more and they can eat breakfast tomorrow.  Unless one of mine was on a special diet per the pedi, I don't think I would allow them to eat/drink anything in the night other than water.  Along those lines, I wouldn't want them sleeping with milk on their teeth.
