Thyroid

My doctor called to tell me my thyroid level was "ok for me" but not for me and the baby. He said it needs to be higher. I'm wondering if it was low to begin with if its now a "normal" level ? They are calling me in synthroid ...anyone else on it?

Re: Thyroid

  • yup, very common to need more during pregnancy!  when you think about it, the level of synthroid you take (if you're already on it) is based on your individual need and your current body weight.  when you gain 20-40 pounds, you would in theory need to supplement with more synthroid to cover the extra body mass you're carrying around while cooking a baby.

my level significantly increased when i was pregnant before, and it's increasing now too.  my endo bumped me up two dose changes preemptively because he likes to stay ahead of the curve rather than play catch-up after the fact.  it's best to be well managed during pregnancy, so definitely take your meds!

  • I've had Hashimoto's (an autoimmune thyroid disease) since 12/2011. It's been horrible trying to get my hypothyroidism regulated.

I take 100mcg of Tirosint for it.

    What was your TSH/T3/T4?
  • Yes I take it. I'm on the 50 mg. he said we would monitor it during pregnancy to see if the dosage is right (it changes on everyone even when you're not pregnant). I didn't take it at first when I found out bc I don't like taking medicines while pregnant, but then I looked up what happens if you do vs. if you don't, and you def don't want to skip it. It's a terrible list.
  • I too have Hashimoto's. Its been a mess since getting pregnant. My doctor says he'll have to monitor it even more closely now.

  • Yes I have hypothyroidism. With DD and this pregnancy they took my blood right away and upped my dosage. I get my blood taken every 4 weeks to test my thyroid levels to make sure I have enough for me and baby. After DD though I went back down. I was on 100mg before pregnancy and am on 125 during. It wasn't a problem with DD I don't expect it to be a problem now. I wouldn't worry at all.
  • I had viral thyroiditis after having DS and went from hyperthyroid to hypothyroid.  Apparently my levels were within the normal range, but are abnormal for pregnancy.  I'm on synthyroid as well and I've actually noticed a considerable improvement with my fatigue and nausea since starting the pills.

I had to go up with last pregnancy and this one. I didn't realize they even prescribe synthroid to you in mg I am just on mcg. Weird!
i am positive she meant to type mcg...  i don't think there's such a thing as a milligram synthroid dosage...  that would be enough to supply an entire town!

i, too, am a hashi's patient!  autoimmune ladies REPRESENT!
  • I'm not sure what my levels were he just said it was "ok for me" but not for me and baby. He said my baby would not get any of it. I'm on 50mcg that just started today. I go back next week for my u/s so I will ask
  • I also have hypothyroidism. Mine is pregnancy caused most likely, I didn't have last time but was diagnosed 2 months pp. Normally I am on 125mcg of synthroid, my endo tested my levels right after I found out and upped my meds to 137mcg. I go back next week for more tests and will every 4 weeks during pregnancy and then postpartum as well until we make sure I have stabilized again.
