Leaving kids in the car

I was at target today and I walked out to find an elderly lady speaking with two police officers right by my car. I didn't hear much of the conversation, but from what I gathered the elderly lady saw 1 or more children left in a vehicle while the mom went in to shop.

As I was driving out I saw the police officer talking to a mom in her suburban. I couldn't tell who she had in the vehicle with her or if she had left the vehicle running while she ran in.

So obviously on a hot day like today it is absolutely not ok to leave any aged person in a car if it isn't running.

My question is it an absolute no no to leave older aged children in a running vehicle while mom goes jn to shop? I remember my parents doing this with me as an older elementary kid.

I don't have a solid opinion on this what do you all think?

Running into 7-11 is different to me than going into Target. No one ever just "runs into" Target.

Yeah this. Like if I had to run in to return a Red Box movie or grab milk I would leave my older child in the car with it running. I'm thinking 8-10.

  • If im just running in for a few things yes. But they are almost 17,15 and 13 so I think it's a bit different for them. When they were younger though never. They would fight to much and fiddle with to much stuff in the car, I was always worried they would put it in drive on accident. Now that the oldest drives it's no big deal.

  • I remember a story from my childhood. I was 3 or 4 and my parents left me in a car and went to some store or office - not sure. They were away for few minutes but to me it seemed like forever. I got scared and opened a door and just wandered off crying for mommy. :( luckily I did not go too far And my mom found me... So to answer your post - never....

  • Now thinking about it I've left my 16 year old babysitter in the car with Zayne when I ran in to buy formula. I felt totally fine about that.

I'm super curious how old the kids were in this target situation.

  • I'm not sure what age would be appropriate...but I can't picture leaving my daughter in the car anytime soon.

I remember my mom would ask me if I wanted to stay in the car and if I said "yes" then I would...but usually this was something like an ATM stop and she could see me the whole time. If you go into Target, even buying one thing can take 10 minute or more.
