Ultrasound Envy

I keep seeing everyone getting their ultrasound at six weeks my doctor refuses to do mine until I'm between 8 and 10 weeks.
FTM just wondering if that's normal or should i fight the system! Lol

Re: Ultrasound Envy

  • Mine was at 8.5, and it was only that early because of a previous miscarriage.  Otherwise it would have been closer to 12.

  • My doc only does one at 20 weeks unless there is a good reason to otherwise!!!  I did have one at 7weeks 1 day this pregnancy because I needed my pregnancy dated (my due date was off by 9 days, it turned out).  Its better to wait until 8 weeks or later anyways, I think, because you see a LOT more on the ultrasound!  Our 7 week baby looked like an itty bitty thing with a heart beat.  My DS1, we had an ultrasound at 8.5 weeks (dating one again) and we could see arms and legs kicking, heart beat, whole body and head and brain...it was awesome!

  • It is normal to not have one until later.  Most of us that are getting them early have history of m/c, infertility, are having complications or are otherwise high risk.  With my first I wasn't going to get an u/s until 16-20 weeks (and just hear the heartbeat at 11 weeks with a dopler).  So enjoy that you are pregnant, none of the above mentioned things & find something to pass the time :)

I called today because I've been having shooting pains from my belly button to my vagina and it was freaking me out so I wanted to move it up from my appointment. And she scolded me for even thinking I'd be able to see something this
    early..

Thanks for the peace of mind :x

  • It's normal and a good sign bc they consider you to be low risk :)

I'm still patiently waiting for my first appointment, which isn't until 10 weeks - two weeks from today!
  • I just went to the dr today for preliminary stuff... Ultrasound Friday, I'll be 9 weeks. I'm eager to see what's in there, but happy that there hasn't been a reason to have to do one early.

  • I hear ya! My doctor won't even see me till 10 weeks and no ultrasound till 12 weeks! Its killing me! As a FTM I would just like to see the baby and know everything is OK. 8w4d and counting. All you can do is wait! :) good luck!
  • I had one at 6w2d for dating purposes to estimate the due date. I saw a little grain of rice but would love to have another to see more.
  • I am seeing an RE and that's why you get them earlier too.

I had one at 6w just to confirm and see how far along I was. I don't get another until 10w. I'm still mad at myself for not looking at the screen last time..:/

  • As far as I know, I'll have one (only) around 20 wks. That's it.
  • earlier ultrasounds aren't always a fun thing - many times it means there's a problem or a history of problems.

much much better to have an u/s at 10-12 weeks with a low risk pregnancy than a scary u/s at 7 weeks due to bleeding or loss history or whatnot.
  • My doctor doesn't do them, now, until between 8 and 10 weeks no matter what (she used to do them between 7 and 10 weeks).  I have a history of loss and won't be getting my first until 9 weeks 5 days.  I'm just looking forward to being able to see more.  I couldn't see much of anything at the 7 week US I got with DS.

  • I went in for my appointment yesterday and the nurse told me to pee in a cup. I asked her if she was sure I didn't need a full bladder for the ultrasound and she said I wasn't going to get one because this was just to confirm pregnancy. I thought that was so stupid I was able to confirm pregnancy at home peeing on a stick myself. Once the doctor came in and I told her I didn't even know if my pregnancy was viable because I hadn't had an ultrasound yet she brought in the machine and did it herself - vaginally. Bottom line, you have to ask for what you want. Screw procedure
