The lunch battle has begun vent

My vent. I was walking DD to school today her first day. She checks our her lunch bag. I packed vanilla Greek yogurt, strawberries, carrots, pirates booty, a water bottle and a cookie as a special treat for her first day. All stuff she loves. I got all kids of flack. " why don't I have cool lunches?" "Everyone else gets a lunch able" "no one else has to drink water they get kool aid" I know for a fact this will be a year long you are the worst mom battle. She is getting bread and water tomorrow. Kidding, well maybe not. Anyone else deal with. This with their school age kid?

sounds fun! all the lunch seems great, but it's just odd to me to not have a sandwich or other "main course".
The greek yogurt would totally be the main course!  My DD wouldn't complain about that lunch in the least, I guess I'm lucky.  She has never compared hers to other lunches in school.  Well, she has.. but just to tell me what others bring "so and so brings chicken nuggets to school!  But mine is healthier, so I'll be more strong".. I guess I've drilled that into her, hah.

Totally no sandwich needed.  My DD calls that a mish mash lunch.   She's having that today at home, in fact (school starts next week).  Greek yogurt, almonds, strawberries and cukes. And a fudge bar for a treat. Perfect :)

OP, I bet it won't be a battle the whole year. Just keep doing it, and she'll eventually realize how much better hers is ;)

  • Ugh, that stinks.  Do you think most of the other kids really have lunachable type things? I hope she's exaggerating at least a little!

  • Could you make her a lunch able (cut up organic cheese, meat, crackers, etc) or is she wanting those gross looking pizza lunch ables?  I'm dreading DD disliking her lunch.  I love school days because she eats what I pack.  She's more difficult at home.

  • Have she doesn't like sandwiches. Nope no homage ones she wants the nasty pizza or chicken nuggets one.
  • Not yet, but it's only kindergarten. I can see juice boxes being an issue. I send a water bottle to school and he has money in his account so that he can buy milk any day he likes, but I don't do juice boxes.

I was actually at the grocery store the other day, thinking how much easier it would be if I just didn't care. It would open up so many possibilities for lunch and a snack if I just started buying Cool Ranch Doritos, Fruit Gushers and Jello cups. And, of course, Lunchables. He could eat a Lunchable every day of the week and never have the same thing twice!
  • Yes Mrs Hizzo my life would be ten times easier to buy pre packaged crap!
  • My kids complained at first because "everyone else gets cookies and pudding and lunchables and blah blah blah", but I just kept responding with something along the lines of sorry but I'm not sending you to school with a bag full of junk. They are in the minority at their school when it comes to healthy lunches and water instead of juice boxes. They know what is healthy and what isn't, and they know what poor eating habits can lead to.

I do throw a treat in occasionally, and once in a blue moon I'll buy them each a lunchable. They each have a thermos so they can take a wider variety of foods. I give them the option of helping to make and pack their lunches which helps with complaints. If they choose what they have, they don't complain. If they don't want to help when given the option, they can't complain.

On the topic of lunchables, I bought tupperware containers with compartments and make my own sometimes. I use fun shaped cutters for the cheese and meat, and even at 7 and 10 they get a kick out of it.

LOL.  It WOULD be easy.  I can't believe there are people who think this stuff is food.

DS begs me for lunchables too.  I have allowed him to take the cheese pizza one without the juice box or candy on a rare occasion.  He has asked for cookies, etc. but I tell him no junk for lunch.  I don't want him on a sugar high for the teachers.  I alternate between sending those single-serve milks or a juice box (gasp--I like to buy the organic Honest Tea ones that are mostly watered down with less sugars but I can't always find them).  Our new school's menu is horrific, but he begs me to buy his lunch too.

Of course, last year I know his friends gave him some of their goodies because I found leftovers in his lunchbox.

I'm going to suck at packing lunches.  I was raised on lunchables and juice.  I know I need to do better for my kids, but this post just gave me a moment of panic....what the heck am I going to feed them? The junk is so easy.  They put it in a nice little container and everything for you.
DS takes PBJ, crackers and cheese, egg salad, and ham sandwiches occasionally.  He usually gets fruit (strawberries, melon or banana) or applesauce, carrots & dip, and occasionally pretzels.

The nice thing is, if you don't feed them that way now, they won't honestly want that crap later on. They might think they do, but they get used to certain tastes and don't like the processed stuff nearly as much as they thought they would, when they do get it.

Examples - I always buy whole wheat bread. Always. Except one day I ran out, and I had a loaf of white bread because I needed it for a recipe I was making the night before. So I made a sandwich with it and sent it to preschool. DS came home and said "Mom, that sandwich was yucky. Don't give me any more of that white bread. I only like the brown kind."

Also, my kids have basically told me to stop taking them to McDonalds as a treat. They like the toys, they won't touch the food, except for the apple slices. I said, "If you aren't going to eat the hamburger or the chicken nuggets, I'm not taking you here anymore." They both said, "That's OK, Mom, we're fine with that."

Ours isn't, thankfully. We can't send peanut products for snack, but for lunch it's fine.

  • For those of you that allow your kids to bring peanut butter lunches, do you talk to them about allergies and making sure they wash their hands after?  I know it isn't there job to keep other kids safe, but my biggest fear is that someone will eat a pb&j and then touch DD.  Or they will go to share a snack and still have pb on their hands and containment the snack.  I'm trying to figure out how to handle this with DD and it's fairly easy while she is young and I can monitor her but I worry about her in school.
All the kids in DD's school wash hands after lunch. They are made to use the toilet and wash hands directly after lunch.  I also tell her to NEVER share lunch.  We don't have peanut allergies, but she's aware.  I've talked with her about them.  Her BFF's brother has a peanut allergy.  I've explained sharing food can be very dangerous for some kids, and to never share lunch and to never take anyones.

Also while DD's school allows peanuts, they have a lunch table for kids with allergies. They all sit together :)  And no other kids are allowed to bring their lunches to the area.

At DD's school, the whole school isn't nut free, it depends on the grade or class.  Kindergarten was nut free as is first grade.  On the first day, we received a note that there is someone in her class severely allergic to peanuts and it lists all of the precautions the parents and the school makes.  DS's preschool is not nut free.

Also, one of DD's good friends (not at her school) is allergic to peanuts.  Because of this, she does know a lot about food allergies.

Yes.  None of the schools DS has gone to have been peanut free.

  • Our district isn't peanut free. There is an option of a peanut free table at some schools. Not always every school. We have a ton of schools in our district. I worry about my daughter going into first grade there.

Starting in a few weeks she is going into a part time in home daycare--two days a week. The women said on those days that she will not be serving peanut butter or peanut products at all. She also said that I could put "safe" foods in her freezer for her---Reese has an egg allergy but isn't anaphylaxis so we aren't worried (too much!) about cross contamination--she just gets really, really itchy--it flares up her eczema

  • My friend's DS has egg, peanut, and other nut allergies (along with some other things).  They have a 504 plan (I think that's what she called it).  She sits down with the school to make a plan on how to protect her son.  I'm not sure what she ended up asking for.
An acquaintance's DD has celiacs.  She asked for anything containing gluten removed from the classroom (no playdough, projects with food containing glutin, ect.).

Oh yeah, I'm freaking out about this too.  DD has a nut allergy and a lactose intolerance.  It's going to be a blast sending her off to school.

I've found the older they get, the less mention of allergies, as the allergic kids start being more responsible for it on their own. It's been mentioned in classes where there is a child with an allergy in case people do birthday snacks, but other than that I have no idea who is allergic to what. DD took peanut butter stuffed pretzels for a snack today in fact.
