Cloth diapering

Anyone planning or used cloth diapers in the past have any advice for a newbie? I'm planning on doing both with the majority of cloth at home. What systems were your fav and wash routines etc... With all the diff options and info it's a little overwhelming.

Re: Cloth diapering

  • There've been a lot cloth diapering posts recently, you might want to start looking through the board for those posts.

  • I'm really a novice. We use both and have all Alva diapers because they're cute and cheap.  The wash routine took a while to get down and we recently switched detergents from homemade stuff to Ecos brand (you can buy at the grocery store) because the ammonia smell was building up.  I buy maybe one box of diapers a month and could be less if I was more on top of washing diapers.

I am really happy with it because it saves us money and doesn't add a lot to our laundry routine. I am planning on buying more diapers for this LO.

  • There's also a board all about cloth diapering those ladies should be able to help:)

  • How many cloth diapers would you consider to be a good stash? I want to mainly cloth but just in case I'm not on top of the washing we will have diapers in.

  • I cloth diapered DS2 from about 6-18months.  I didn't get newborn cloth diapers, with a toddler running around I just wasn't interested in the extra hassle.  We used mostly pocket diapers, I loved Fuzzibunz and Bumgenius.  Around 18-20 months DS2 would pee too much at once and we had lots of leaks or couldn't really go anywhere without an incident and it became too much hassle, so I went back to disposables.  Since I already have the stash I'll probably do the same thing again.
The cloth diapering board is great to lurk on and gets lots of great info.  There really is quite a bit that goes into it and it does take a while to learn it all.

  • Also, there are cloth diapering trials available that are fantastic. We did one through Jillian's Drawers and it really helped to get my husband on board and to see which brands we preferred without amassing a huge stash of mismatched diapers (my husband made very clear he only wanted to deal with one kind).

We ended up with a mix of BumGenius diapers, as the snaps were all the same. We liked the pockets the best, however, because they were more adaptable absorption-wise as our son grew.

Our wash routine is pretty basic: cool prewash, hot wash, cool rinse, all in a water-guzzling top-loader with a scoop of Charlie's Soap Powder.
