Horrible story -- baby death mentioned

WTF is wrong with people? This happened not far from where I live. This restaurant was a frequent hangout for our crowd when we were in college. I will never understand why, when this woman could have chosen abortion or adoption, she would feel killing her baby was the right choice. And I feel like at 26, she doesn't even have the excuse of youthful ignorance to blame for her actions. I seriously want to strangle this woman.

  • I can't even process how this can happen. So, so unbelievably sad.

  • Stories like this make me so sad and aggravated.  With all the "drop off" laws and things like that and the insane amount of people wanting to adopt children, it just seems incredibly selfish and twisted to do this.  She has to have some sort of mental health issues or something.  So sad!

My thought exactly! Not only did she have options, she must be mentally off.

The hard thing about the safe haven places is that by taking your baby to one, you are admitting that you got pregnant and had a baby. The women that do this hide their pregnancies, go into labor, deliver, and dispose of the baby and all evidence in secret. To hand over a baby is to admit publicly that you were pregnant, something a lot of women in desperate situations can't fathom doing.
Couldn't the woman still hide the pregnancy (not that I think this is a good idea), deliver in private then get herself to a hospital or police station (maybe one within walking distance)?

Of course. I just mean, in that moment of desperation of delivering you aren't thinking rationally. You're thinking, "I have to get rid of this mess and pretend it never happened." We had a case here similar and it ended up spilling over into our hospital so I have a little first hand account of what her perspective was. Not that I'm discounting the tragedy or making excuses. Just trying to explain their immediate thought process when they realize it's actually happening.

True, I'm sure in that moment, the woman has to be freaking out. But I just can't wrap my mind around a 26-year-old who's immature enough to hide the pregnancy and crazy enough to kill the baby and think she'll get away with it. The whole thing just makes me sad. I remember when I was in high school and early college, there were so many stories like this of teenage moms (and sometimes the dads) killing newborns.

Yeah, that was my very first thought when this story broke.

Yes and no.  I totally get what LL is saying.  It wasn't about the baby, it was about her and the embarrassment/ reality of having a baby and letting others know that.  I think what LL is trying to say is that even with Safe Haven laws the woman would have to admit at some point somewhere that she birthed a child and for some that isn't something they can do!
