Overweight and FTP

Hi all! I've been planning this pregnancy ever since my husband and I got married 1 1/2 yrs ago. Unfortunately with both the wedding and now the pregnancy, the more I tried to lose, it always ended up the more I gained. I'm 251 now and curious if anyone else is anxious about being overweight/obese and pregnant.

Re: Overweight and FTP

  • I  am a plus size mama as well. This is my 2nd pregnancy and had a perfectly normal preg with my son and he was not supersized. It can be done. I recommend you check out the Plus Size Mommy Memiors Facebook page for helpful info and other mamas. (Not that you are not welcome here, you are!) Good luck to you!

  • Is it a private group? I certainly don't want my friends and family finding out the wrong way because Facebook tattled on me.
  • Its just a LIKE page. she also has a regular page and if you have a question she cant answer she can post it anonymously. Her name is Jen.

https://plussizebirth.com/ is her regular nonfacebook page. no one can let the proverbial cat out of the bag there :)

  • I am 5'5" and 190lbs - I am considered obese. My doctor isn't too concerned about it, although she did say that she doesn't want me to gain any weight, rather that she wants me to lose weight by delivery day. Starting with my second trimester, I'll be seeing a nutritionist to help me keep my weight in check. Your doctor might have some suggestions to help your weight stay under control, such as seeing a nutritionist. When I was pregnant with Skippy, I gained 61lbs, so I am a little bit nervous, but hopeful that a professional can help me this time.

  • At 5'11", I weighted 228 when I got pregnant with my daughter, weighed 260 when I gave birth (induced because of pre-eclampsia).

This time I'm 206, with an expected weight gain of 11-20lbs for this preg (according to a calculator app I found). I'd like to keep it at no gain, since at my weight, it would be safe for me not to gain.

Being obese, it will be hard to stick to healthy eating and portions, but most of it is a mind game. Just don't start saying "I'm eating for two." The second we start justifying our over eating is the second we set ourselves up for failure. Stay strong!!! *hugs* only things you'll need to watch out for, as far as I remember, are hypertension (high BP), gestational diabetes, swelling. :-) all manageable if they happen!
  • sweetpeace13  thanks for sharing!

I'm 5'4" and currently weighing in at 214 (morbidly obese, yay.).  I have my 8 week appt tomorrow and I'm really hoping the doctor has some advice for me.  With my DD, I started at 190 and gained 30 pounds.  I would really, really love to not gain more than ten pounds with this one....we'll see....

  • If hubby insists on the ice cream, ask him to get frozen yogurt instead. Far less fat. :-) I've learned a lot of tricks for swapping out where I can - I used to be addicted to pistachios (holy fattiness!), and switched to edamame (far less far, just as satisfying for me). Sea salt instead of iodized salt, Crystal Light lemonade instead of Sprite. Trading out some of your bigger items for less fat versions can make a huge difference (like low-fat sour cream - tastes just as good! But not low fat mayo. That stuff is naaaasty.)

I still have my two level teaspoons of sugar and whole milk in my coffee though - NOBODY messes with my coffee, dammit! Lol
  • I'm 5'7 and was 208 when I first found out I was pregnant. I'm already up to 213 and its freaking me out. Like I'm getting really panicky about it. I was still counting calories until the morning sickness started and now if something sounds good I tend to eat it because most things make me sick and hardly anything sounds good. I still work out most days and try to make healthy choices but honestly I'm really nervous about being obese and pregnant. I haven't seen my doctor yet since I became pregnant and I was about 10 lbs heavier when I did my pre-conception visit and he didn't seem worried then.

I should add that I check out the baby center plus size and pregnant group sometimes too. It makes me feel a little better.

  • I'm here too! At 5'7" and 235, I'm pretty big myself. I actually lost 25 pounds before I found out I was pregnant. My doctor doesn't have any concerns, she just wants me to chose quality over quantity. I kept saying I was going to keep exercising and eating well when I found out, but between the exhaustion and m/s I can't get my act together!!! I've cut down on the takeout since I'm slacking on the cooking, DH has been ordering out and so I'll maybe have some soup or an egg white and turkey bacon sandwich. But my hope is to snap out of my slug-ness and get back on the health kick in my second trimester.
