Babies: 9 - 12 Months

No teeth - what table foods can I give?

Ds is 7 1/2 months, and has no teeth as yet. He loves puffs, bite size pieces of carrot and bananas. He loves to feed himself, but I'm wondering what table foods I should not give without teeth. Do they even uses their teeth to eat? He is very good with the chewing motion and obviously uses his jaw to mash foods. His pincer grasp is great. Can I introduce shredded cheese, little pieces of steamed veggie (green beans, peas)? Or should I wait? Thanks!

  • DD only has 2 teeth, but uses the sides more than the front when she chews.  I give her toast, pancakes, grilled cheese, ham sandwiches, pasta, all sorts of stuff.

  • you can introduce foods now really, all those are great ideas. My DS is almost 14 months and only has 2 teeth and he eats everything... He didn't get his first tooth until 10.5 months... potatoes are great too

  • Babies do not need teeth to eat.  My DD is 9 months, has zero teeth and is on 100% table foods.  She eats basically everything that I do.  I just make sure everything is cut up small enough for her.

  • My dd is 10 months old, has zero teeth and only eats table food. She loves things like beans & rice, soups and stews (broth drained off), pasta, mac and cheese, lentils, ripe pears (when ripe they're really soft), bananas, chunks of cooked squash and sweet potato, real oatmeal (not baby cereal), very small pieces of shredded cooked meat, etc. I wouldn't give her a steak of course, ?but there's really very little that she can't manage without teeth.?
  • You can give whatever you want.  Most babies don't get molars until into their second year.  They learn to gum food quite well.
  • this is a great post I haven't offered DD anything because she has no teeth. Maybe I will try out some puffs and see how she does
