I am 6 months pregnant, looking to cloth diaper. Took a cloth diaper 101 class yesterday and now my head is swimming with so many options! I like the idea of a wipeable cover, all in 2 with the snap in inserts or using the AI2 cover and a prefolds with snappies instead of the insert depending on who is diapering. I have heard a lot about the Flip system but since there is no snap, pocket or snappie to hold the insert in place, I am worried it would move around a lot, especially as the baby becomes more mobile. I really want a system that will last throughout the entire diapering process. What are your thoughts about Flips, or any other suggestions of what have worked for you. I think I'd really like a reusable cover as opposed to pocket diapers. Thanks so much!
Re: Feeling overwhelmed!
First of all, take a breath. It will be ok. You'll figure it out!
Flips likely won't fit a NB. So if you decide to use them, you'll need an alternative for the first 2-8 weeks. After that, they are a great option. The PUL is good quality. A lot of people on here like them. I haven't tried their inserts, but they work pretty well with a newborn or small prefold. I would suggest using a snappi and prefold at least until LO's poop thickens up though. Otherwise you'll need a lot of covers at first, because the poop won't stay on an insert/tri-folded prefold.
Have you looked at Best Bottoms covers? They are wipe-able, which you seem to like. They snap down really small, so I think they'd fit most newborns. (They have four size options instead of the normal 3 most one-sized systems have.) You can either snap in their inserts for an AI2 system, or you can just use prefolds. We use prefolds in ours a lot of the time. I just use their inserts when traveling since they are trimmer than a prefold. I'd still recommend getting a snappi or two and snappi'ing during the runny NB poo stage (around the first 4-6 months) just like the Flip.
The other advice I'd give, is don't put all your eggs in one basket so to speak. You might love a certain brand/type the first few months and then end up hating it as LO grows. And then maybe loving it again later. So if you really think Ai2 is going to work best for your family, maybe try 2 or 3 different AI2 brands. That way you don't get stuck with all the same diaps that don't work or you don't like. My other advice is to consider over-night options when you choose what to buy. You obviously won't need anything right away, but once your LO does start sleeping through the night you'll need something more absorbent like a hemp/bamboo doubler or a fitted to go under your covers. Not something you need right away, but just keep it in mind as you decide how much to spend now & how many diaps to get. I like to have 3-4 ON diapers for my 11 month old.
Good luck!! As always, any questions you have feel free to post on here!
That being said, the covers definitely work better with the flip inserts as opposed to the prefolds. I found the prefolds just bunched up and weren't as absorbent. However sometimes if put two in for nap time and that worked great. (For bigger babies, maybe 8 months.)
I personally can't stand the pocket type covers because the are harder and grosser to spray clean. Also, with the flip cover I could get more than one "diaper" out of them if I wiped it and there wasn't poop. With the pockets there is one use then to the wash. You will definitely need more diapers.
FYI, if you're thinking you'd like to buy some flip covers they are on sale at cottonbabies.com under the "seconds" sale.
