Sippy/straw cup WWYD?

We are trying to get E to take milk (cow or almond, not breast) out of anything other than a bottle. When we put it in a sippy cup, she got very upset and refused all sippies, even with water or juice for 2 weeks and is still throwing them at us if she is suspicious.
@mdiblasi10 suggested trying a straw cup, and I thought that was a great idea so I bought one this weekend. Ideally I want her to drink milk out of the straw cup. So, WWYD, have the straw cup be dedicated milk only? Or do I let her learn on it with water then do milk later?
If it's a milk only cup, I'm afraid she just won't take it. If I let her learn with water then switch to milk, I'm afraid she will feel tricked again and refuse the straw cups. Help!

Re: Sippy/straw cup WWYD?

  • I tried to put cow milk in the sippy/straw cup which D happily uses for water and he refused it. I thought it was asking too much to change to milk from formula and also take away his bottles. So I decided to keep the bottles and let him drink his milk out of them. Later I will get him 100% over to cups.

Does E accept non breast milk in any format? Maybe you should work on that first and then work on the cup.

As an aside, i am sorry I only lurk here most of the time. I just never have time to participate like I want to, so I rarely post :(

  • She is so funny! Silly girl :) I am sure she will eventually get it. I would try water first and then do milk later. Are you still nursing her? If you are, at least you know she is getting fluids that way. I know that keeping the water somewhere nearby Grayson, allowing him to choose to take a sip in between playing, etc., helped a lot for us. I also pretend to drink out of his cup and he wants to mimic me. I offer it at meal times, but I don't force it. I offer and let him decide, and he is getting better and better. If he ever does want to throw it, I remove it from his tray or his reach and offer later.

    Good luck!!

I haven't tried other types of milk in a bottle. We got a big fat no on milk in a sippy, and in an open cup. We're currently mixing BM with WCM to stretch my supply and get her used to it slowly.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm glad to know you still lurk some, I miss you!

Haha, we tried the fake drinking. She did it right back to us! She mimicked our fake drinking. She's so silly.

  • We did water in sippy first between meals and then one day I went cold turkey with no bottles since mine was bf but in a bottle so his only option was the sippy and did fine. The trick was finding the sippy cup he loved. He like the nuk at first with water but would never take milk out of it. So I think the cup really does make a difference for them.

  • DD would always drink water out of anything we put it in, but after months of trying different cups with milk, we discovered the only kind of cups DD will drink milk out of are the Take n Toss straw cups (which are basically like the kid straw cups they have at restaurants -- that's how we figured it out! LOL). It turns out she didn't like having to work to drink it out of the other sippies that have the anti-spill suction. So she gets milk with meals only because I don't want her spilling it all over the house. She still uses her other sippy cups with water when shes's playing or on the go.

Elf, I am going to file this away for when I decide to try to get rid of the bottle in a few months-- what you say about not wanting to work for it totally makes sense. The straw cup that we normally use for water and that I also tried with milk has a valve like a normal sippy cup, so DS has to work on that a lot harder than if he is drinking out of a bottle with a level 3 nipple on it as he now does.

    that is a great tip!

  • Do you have a freezer stash? When I introduced WCM I mixed it in the sippy cup with BM. I started with 1/3 WCM and 2/3 BM. Then after a while I went to 50/50 and then to 1/3 BM and 2/3 WCM before finally giving him just WCM in the sippy. I'm not sure if it will help in your situation, but it worked like a charm for DS. GL!

  • @Dragonfly1226 Yes, I'm still nursing, and do have a stash.  But I can no longer pump enough for her, so it's a bag a day right now.  We have started mixing some in her bottle, we did 1:4 last week, and 1:3 this week.  I just don't know if we're going to have enough frozen to make it.  Thanks though, great minds think alike!
I guess I'm doing too much to make the switch to cow's milk and away from bottles at the same time.

  • We have cups that we only use for water and ones that we only use for milk. They are all the same brand and style, but she knows that the pink cup = always water, and the green and purple ones are always milk. We have a second set for school, with travel lids. Same idea though (one for water, two for milk).

    They are all straw cups.

    Good luck!!
