CoSleeping & Travel Qs

We have 4 month old cosleeping/bedsharing twins (depending on the phase we're in, like right now one is in a co-sleeper and the other in a crib right next to our bed, but they have/do sleep in our bed and I'm completely comfortable with bedsharing).  'm a serious planner - so I'm thinking about logistics related to travel.  We have a few trips planned over the next year.

1) Weekends at my parents house where a double bed is available for "us" as well as the floor, or a PackNPlay, and since it's my mom's house I can buy and leave other equipment there if necessary - they'll be 6 months+
2) Overnights in a hotel - they'll be 8 months+
3) Week at a beach rental house where we'll have a bedroom with a king bed and access to renting PackNPlays/Cribs - they'll be 15 months

I don't really worry too much about night sleeping after DH and I are in bed because we can flank them on either side, and we're both light sleepers so if someone starts to squirm and crawl around we're 99% certain to wake up and corral them.  I do worry a bit about naps and before DH and I are ready for bed (hoping not to go to bed at 7 pm when on vacation, we will be taking our video monitor). We have to fly on all of these trips (since we live so far from all of our family), so we have to be able to pack small/light if we take any "equipment".  What do you do when you travel?  My non-cosleeping sister is worried that I'm going to have babies falling off of the bed and that I'm going to want a game plan going into any travel situations. Should we just try to put them in rented/borrowed cribs? Anyone have advice?

Re: CoSleeping & Travel Qs

  • You might want to buy and leave a bed guard rail at your mom's, and perhaps you can rent some while away elsewhere. That's my plan for now.

  • So a quick search on amazon yielded bed rails costing $35 for "normal" rails. I also saw some inflatable rails for $21.

From what I've seen crib rentals are $$$$ (one hotel where we stayed when I was pregnant was $25/night). If your twins can bed share together and then you join them, you could buy and leave the bed rails at each stop for the cost of a crib rental for two kids.

If you have the rails delivered to each location ahead of you (or pack the inflatable rails), that might do the trick! Good luck!

  • I have been cosleeping with DD since she was 4 months (she's 13 months now).  We have traveled with her a fair bit.  She has been to Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay and several provinces in Canada.  We often had a king sized bed. I didn't have any issues cosleeping with her.  Most of the cosleeping while traveling was when she was about 7-8 months old and she wasn't mobile yet.  I would just keep her next to me in bed and never had any issues. You could put up a bed rail or move the mattress to the floor if you are worried about it.

  • All the PP's advice sounds good. I would just add, even though you're a planner (I am too, so I get it!), just worry about the soonest trip. Things change so quickly with babies that your plans will most likely have to get altered once they're 8 months, and again when they're 15 months, depending on what your sleeping arrangements are like at those points.
