DC Area

Hi Mamas!

Any Mom's out there living in the Washington DC area? Looks like there is a really good chance that our little family may be relocating to the area. Any advice on some nice suburbs to check out? Would love any and all info from anyone living in that area. Thanks!

Re: DC Area

  • We are ina suburb of northern virginia which is considered "the DC area". How close to dc do you need/want to be?

  • Northern VA or Chevy Chase MD... Arlington is closer to the city. I really love the northern VA area, great schools too!

  • Stay away from Prince Georges County in MD. There are a few good cities but mostly lots of crime.

  • I have friends that live all the way from Purcellville, VA to Chevy Chase, MD. It's really all about what you want your living environment & commute to work to be like. The nice thing is you can choose absolute country, suburbs or city, they are all at your fingertips in this area.
  • Lurking from March-- but I live in the DC suburbs. Areas to look at will depend on budget (Chevy Chase/Bethesda etc is very expensive) and whether you need metro access to the District. In Maryland, Montgomery County has good schools (I have a 10th grader and 2nd grader in public school) but I agree that you should avoid PG county. Also if you need daycare, be aware the wait lists can be really long.
  • It really depends where you/ your H will be working. Traffic in this area is horrendous, with 10 mile drives easily taking 45 minutes. The closer you are to DC, the more you're going to spend for housing. Fairfax and Loudoun Counties in VA have excellent school systems, but Loudoun doesn't have Metro access yet and even if it did, that's a long ride into DC.

  • He would be working for The Redskins, so in the Landover area. After doing a small amount of research, I ruled out living anywhere in that area, crime rates seemed a bit high and then reading some comments thus far, I think we'll stay away from Prince Georges County for sure.
  • I live near Mt Vernon in Fairfax county, VA. Schools in this area are a mixed bag. We are already planning to send DS to Catholic school because our house is in the crappy school zone. But I like our house.
  • If he will be working in Landover, I would check out Anne Arundel County (i.e. Annapolis, MD), it is the next county out from PG County and a WORLD of difference.
