We have been using a regular bumper for 2 months now in my son's crib. I know it's not the popular choices but it is what works for my son's needs. As I have stated in previous posts about bumpers, my son wears leg braces and he needs that extra padding for when he hits his feet against the crib.
We honestly do not have any trouble with our son putting his face up against the bumper. Someone recently told me on here that it could cause CO2 build up but I'm not really sure how that is possible with a big open top and an open well ventilated room... I guess anything is possible though.
I do not feel like a bad mother for using the regular bumper as much as some other people have tried to make me feel like one on here. It's what works for us. Our pedi knows that we use it and while it's not his recommendation, he understands that in our case it is probably necessary.

To the OP, if I were going to use bumpers, I would use the mesh ones. We currently don't use them because DS has only gotten a limb through the slats a couple of times.

We currently don't use bumpers because LO is only 3 months but when he gets older we may. He's already rolled and whacked himself in the head once and it left a little mark plus he's gotten every limb stuck. I've also had friends say their LO while teething will gnaw on the rails. Now I'm saying I will put it up when LO is like 7-8 months old if needed and he is mobile enough where he can easily turn or get up if his face is near the side.
